Ryan Reynolds has had an unfortunate run with the DC universe, with his big starring vehicle,Green Lantern, being released to abysmal reviews and poor audience reception. The film became a laughing-stock among internet communities, to the point where even Reynolds himself has taken cracks at the film, including a joke at his own expense in theDeadpoolfilms. Nonetheless, he nearly appeared inZack Snyder’s Justice League.
Green Lanternwas released sometime before DC’s current push for a connected cinematic universe, so it wasn’t a huge surprise whenReynolds wasn’t invited to return as Green Lanternin any of the films. In fact, some have suggested that the lack of any Green Lantern characters in the current DC film universe may be due to concern over the poor reception to the last crack at the character in a live-action film.

Still, some fans were hoping thatReynolds' Green Lantern may get a do-oversomeday, and as it turns out, he almost did. During a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder, director of the Snyder Cut ofJustice Leagueand creative lead for the early DCEU films, mentioned that he was actually considering having the Green Lantern appear in his version of the superhero team-up film.
That said, Snyder’s vision for Reynolds wasn’t astheGreen Lantern that everyone knows, but rather as another green lantern that also happened to be around: “There was another idea I had for the Green Lantern that wasn’t Ryan, and so I thought that if we had gone down this path of Green Lantern, I would have had to have Ryan as the additional Lantern.” So, it seems that while there was some interest in having aGreen Lantern character enter Snyder’sJustice League, it wouldn’t have been the same one that Reynolds played in hisGreen Lanternmovie.
Many fans had hoped for some kind of Green Lantern cameo or nod, as Hal Jordan, the original Green Lantern, was one of the most famous Justice League members in the comics. Snyder didn’t elaborate on what exactly he would’ve done with the Green Lantern character, only that he was interested in filling out the Lantern Corps a little bit if they were going to show up.
While Reynolds may never don the green power ring again, it’s interesting to see that it was at leaston the table forZack Snyder’s Justice Leagueat one point, and perhaps there is still room for a Green Lantern in the future of the DC Film universe. Whatever happens, it’s clear that there’s still a lot of love for the character, and maybe that will eventually spiral out into a second shot at a live-action feature someday.
Zack Snyder’s Justice Leagueis now available on HBO Max.
