The collective excitement for the eventual release of Double Fine’sPsychonauts 2continues to grow with each passing week.Psychonauts 2is still on trackto release in 2021 after years of development, as confirmed by Double Fine’s official Twitter account.
However, it appears there may be a chance thatPsychonauts 2is much closer to release than anticipated. Recently, players using the official Xbox app were able to pre-loadPsychonauts 2out of nowhere, despite no release date being given by Double Fine.

This news picked up steam thanks to a Twitter user and Xbox News reporter, Idle Sloth, who further credited a Twitter user going by the handle @lHybr1dl. However, while Psychonauts 2 was available for pre-load on May 5, the ability to do so was swiftly removed shortly after it was discovered.Double Fine’s Twitter accountmade a cheeky comment no doubt in recreation to the surprise event, calmly asking what was going on as it was busy “eating some ‘Bold’ Chex mix.” Naturally, interested fans filled the replies asking what exactly this means for the game.
At the moment, it’s a bit unclear what exactly this means forPsychonauts 2. As of yet, no official announcement of a solid release date for the game has been made public. However, just last monthDouble Fine gave an encouraging update onPsychonauts 2’s status, saying the game is “real” and “playable.” While it’s abundantly clear that the team is reluctant to give any concrete details on the game’s release, this slip up with the Xbox app could mean that fans are in for a potential surprise release
While no news of the game going gold has broken yet either, fans know that several aspects of the game are already complete. In early January,Tim Schafer confirmed he wrote his final line of dialoguefor the game, meaning the script is likely fully complete. While tutorial or flavor text may still need to be written, dialogue is a major part of any story driven game, so this is a major step forward forPsychonauts 2’s development.
Aside from the game’s dialogue, Double Fine has also made it clear that the team is in the final stretch ofPsychonauts 2’s development. Additionally,Double Fine isn’t crunching during development, which is an admirable stance to take in a space where more and more developers and teams crunch to meet deadlines. While fans aren’t able to pre-load the game any longer, it was discovered that the initial pre-load for the game was 27.7 GB. While this could still be subject to change, it does give fans a general idea of the size ofPsychonauts 2when the game eventually releases sometime in 2021.
Psychonauts 2will release on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X at a yet-to-be-determined date in 2021.
