Most bosses inWorld of Warcraftare notoriously stingy when it comes to parting with their mounts, with the vast majority of drop rates being well below 5% – but one extremely lucky player beat the odds twice in a single attempt. When it comes torare mounts inWorld of Warcraft, their prestige is more often than not tied to feats of fortune rather than feats of strength (though the two can sometimes intersect). There is no better example than the famous Ashes of Al’ar mount from Tempest Keep, requiring no particular skill to earn, just a lot of patience and persistence to overcome its extremely low drop rate.
Themounts inWrath of the Lich Kingfollowed the same tradition, and people are notoriously farming the Lich King for Invincible’s Reins even to this day. However, there’s one series of mounts that this expansion also introduced which are thematically linked to the upcomingDragonflight: the drakes. The easiest to obtain would undoubtedly be the Bronze, Obsidian, and Twilight Drakes, being guaranteed drops from old instances. On the other end of this spectrum, however, players can expect to find some trouble in earning the Blue and Azure Drakes, which are individually a meager 2% drop from Malygos in the Eye of Eternity.

The stars aligned for Daniel545, who managed to win both the Blue and the Azure Drake mounts in a single Malygos kill. Considering the mounts are generated on the loot table individually, this means that the outcome had a 0.04% chance of happening. While the drakes themselves aren’t considered to be in the top tier of therarestWorld of Warcraftmounts, the sheer unlikeliness of both drakes dropping at the same time gives Daniel’s success a whole new dimension.
Daniel shared his success on theWorld of Warcraftsubreddit. Ultimately, moments of euphoria such as this play a key reason as to whyWorld of Warcrafthas enjoyed such popularity over the course of its long years. Celebrating its 18th Anniversary this month,World of Warcraftplayers can use this opportunity to level up alts at up to a 78% increase to their experience gain.
WithWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflightlaunching on November 28, a new expansion is on the horizon. ThoughDragonflightis introducing alternative ways to obtain mounts, hopefully it will also bring a few traditionally rare boss drops for players to get excited about, as the expansion’s focus on Dragonriding and its overall draconic theme are perfect for it.
World of Warcraftis available now for PC.Dragonflightlaunches on November 28.
