The officialWorld of WarcraftTwitter saw the opportunity and was not about to let it pass without making a gag of its own. It shared an image of a globe with the map of Azeroth pasted across it. The signature golden question mark turn-in icon hovers above the planet, jokingly answering the question of the mysterious celestial object in the process. The newWoWmeme gave a whole new meaning to the phrase “World Quest.”
Scientists have no idea what this mysterious object actually is. Some theories posit it is a remote galaxy, or possibly two galaxies caught in each other’s gravitational pull. Either way, the question mark-shaped object is further than 1,500 light years away from Earth–but still within the 13 billion light-year range ofthe James Webb Space Telescope. Future images may shed more light on what the unidentified object is.
In the meantime,World of Warcraftfans are having a field day with the meme. Some players joked about wanting to buy a spaceship so they could move to Azeroth, while others said this was the introduction of the new “Universe Quest” inWorld of Warcraft. Others couldn’t help but noticeWoWmade the sword of Sargerassticking out of the planet in the meme, proving Blizzard hadn’t forgotten about it after all.
World of Warcraftisn’t the only game players were reminded of by the NASA picture. Some players were reminded of the unique planets and sectors fromStar Fox, while others made tongue-in-cheek jokes about how they had finally found the lastRiddler trophy fromBatman: Arkham Knights. Whether it is a quest marker, a glitch in the system, aBatmanreference, or an unknown celestial body, the appearance of this mysterious object is apt considering how many questions people have as to what it actually is.
