Summary
Ghostface is back in the upcoming sequel,Scream 7, and fans are speculating about what could happen in the horror franchise moving forward.Due to the nature of Ghostface being different killers in each movie, fans have long debated whether there is an ultimate mastermind behind all the murdersin all six movies.
This theory has gained more traction in recent years, withScream (2022)andScream 6pointing towards the possibility of acult of Ghostface, and rumors suggest this could come to fruition inScream 7.Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott has also fueled the speculation that a person from her past could be involved in the next spree of murders.Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey are rumored to return alongside the iconic final girl, with Kevin WIlliamson on board to direct the upcoming sequel.

What are the theories surrounding a Ghostface mastermind?
The theories of a Ghostface mastermind have existed as far back asScream 3, when Kevin Williamson’s original plan was to bring Stu Macher back as the leader of a cult of Ghostface killersat Woodsboro High. Williamson left the project due to his busy schedule, and Ehren Kruger took over as the screenwriter onScream 3, and these ideas were shelved.
The scrapped plans forScream 3haven’t stopped fans speculating about the possibility of a mastermind behind all the Ghostface murders.Fans want Stu Macher to return, and if he was to make an appearance inScream 7, it would suggest he had some involvement in the murders over the years. Even if it wasn’t a planned involvement, Stu Macher was the original Ghostface alongside Billy Loomis, and it was their murder spree that inspired many other killers to wear the Ghostface mask.

In many ways,Ghostface killer,Roman Bridgeris a mastermind of sorts, as he reveals inScream 3that he tracked down Billy Loomis and encouraged him to killMaureen Prescott. However, Roman is now dead, and couldn’t have had any involvement in any of the killing sprees in the last three sequels.
Jason Carvey and Greg Bruckner’s failed attempt to launch an attack on the Carpenter sisters inScream 6was widely seen as a suggestion of a cult of Ghostfacebeing in operation, but no mastermind was ever revealed.Kirby Reedalso suggests that she’s been involved in investigating Ghostface attacks, which further points to a potential mastermind.

Kevin Williamson
If it was revealed that there was a Ghostface mastermind inScream 7, it would have to be dealt with in a particular way, or it could ruin the franchise.Stu Macher’s return has long been hinted at, and he would be the most logical Ghostface mastermind, after being involved in the original killings inScream. However, Stu was more of an accomplice to Billy Loomis, so it doesn’t add up that he would be the man orchestrating the rest of the Ghostface killings. There is also the stumbling block that Stu most likely died in the originalScream, despite the protestations of many fans. So who else could be a worthy Ghostface mastermind?
Hank Loomis
When Billy Loomis is arrested inScreamon suspicion of being the Ghostface killer, his father, Hank Loomis, turns up to support his son during Sheriff Burke’s questioning. It is later revealed that Hank was having an extra marital affair with Maureen Prescott, and this led to Billy’s mother leaving him, causing Billy to kill Maureen, and orchestrating the Ghostface killings one year later.
It is quite possible that Hank Loomis was behind the rest of the murders, as his ex-wife, Nancy Loomis, was the mastermind behind the killings inScream 2’s best idea. It’s not too far-fetched to suggest that Hank and Nancy joined forces in the face of grief after Billy died, to plot an attack on Sidney Prescott.Sidney’sScream 7storycould reveal that it was Hank Loomis who was behind all the future murder sprees.

Christina Carpenter
One of the disappointments ofScream (2022)andScream 6was that Sam and Tara’s mother, Christina, never made an appearance. She was mentioned throughout both movies, and it was revealed inScream 6that she was now estranged from both of her daughters. Rumors suggest she would’ve made an appearance inScream 7, beforeMelissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s exits.
Christina Carpenter could still return inScream 7as she has obvious links to Sidney Prescott, as her ex-boyfriend, Billy Loomis, is the father of Sam Carpenter.Christina could be revealed to be the Ghostface mastermind behind all the attacks, and her involvement could link back as far as the original Ghostface killings. It would also be a good way to include Sam and Tara in the story forScream 7, despite their no show.
Leslie Macher
Every victim in the Scream franchise has a bereft family who are left to mourn them, but this is also no different for the family members of the killers who have perished. The franchise has a history of revenge as a motive, with Nancy Loomis targeting Sidney for killing her son, Billy, inScream 2, and all three ofScream 6’s Ghostface killers are Richie Kirsch’s devastated family. But not a lot has been said about the family of Stu Macher, and the grief they have suffered due to his involvement in the original killings.
InScream (2022), Ghostface targets Stu Macher’s nephew, Vince Schneider, and he is brutally killed in the parking lot of a local bar in Woodsboro. The gang discover his identity when they find out his mother is Stu’s sister, Leslie Macher. There is a possibility Leslie was behind the death of her son, in order to protect her family from further shame, as he was a rather nefarious character. What if Leslie Macher was the mastermind behind the Ghostface murders in the sequels?, and is either assisting Stu, or avenging his death, if he did actually die?
