In 2013, Rockstar Games launchedGrand Theft Auto 5, which would go on to become the most-profitable entertainment product in history. Five years later, it launchedRed Dead Redemption 2, which earned near-universal critical acclaim from critics and was a massive success of its own. Rockstar’s track record speaks for itself, with the company earning its reputation as one of the top video game developers in the world.

Rockstar Gameshas released one hit after the other for decades now, and so it’s no surprise that many are interested in seeing what’s next from the company. WithRed Dead Redemption 2having launched over a year ago and next-generation game consoles on the horizon, excitement for Rockstar’s next game is even more intense than usual, though it’s unclear when exactly Rockstar will make its big reveal.

An official reveal forRockstar’s next gamecould really come any day, but in the meantime, there are some distinct possibilities as to what’s next for the company. The following titles seem like the most likely possibilities for Rockstar’s next game.

Agent

Agentis a long shot, but it’s still a possibility for Rockstar’s next game. For the uninitiated,Agentwas officially announced all the way back in 2009, with the game meant to be a stealth-action game of some kind set in the 1970s. Development onAgentbegan in some capacity at least a couple of years before its official announcement, but despite the idea having existed in some form for over a decade now, nothing substantial has been revealed.

In November of 2018, theAgenttrademark was abandoned by Take-Two Interactive, which could mean that the project has been canceled. However, it’s possible that the concept behindAgentis continuing on in some other form, though that remains to be seen. Rockstar has yet to officially confirm that the game is canceled, and so until then,Agentis always a possibility for Rockstar’s next video game project.

Bully Rockstar Games

Bully 2

The originalBullywas well-received at the time of its release, earning strong reviews and sales alike. Rockstar has since portedBullyto other platforms with new features, but it hasn’t gone as far as to develop a full-fledged sequel of the game. However, a version ofBully 2was reportedly in-development around 10 years ago, only to get canceled before it was ever officially announced. Since then, rumors ofBully 2have persisted, with convincing but fake screenshots and map images fueling speculation that Rockstar could finally be releasing a follow-up to its hit open world school game. Unfortunately, nothing official has been announced in regards toBully 2, and it seems more likely than not that the game isn’t in active development.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Perhaps the most obvious choice for Rockstar’s next game isGrand Theft Auto 6. As previously mentioned,GTA 5is the most-profitable entertainment product of all time, and soGTA 6is inevitable. However,Grand Theft Auto 5’s multiplayer mode, GTA Online, is still making an absurd amount of cash for Rockstar, and so it has continued to support it with DLC and add-ons like the recent Diamond Casino Heist update that launched just a few weeks ago. Considering this, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that Rockstar may be somewhat hesitant to move forward withGrand Theft Auto 6just yet, what withGTA 5still so successful.

Then again, with next-generation consoles set to launch during the holiday season of 2020, perhaps now is the perfect time for Rockstar to move forward withGTA 6.GTA 6could take proper advantage of the next-generation technology, and deliver yet another record-breaking game release for the company.GTA 6would presumably feature an online component similar to GTA Online, and one has to imagine that hardcoreGTA Online playerswould have no problem moving over to the new game.

Overall,GTA 6seems like the most likely candidate for Rockstar’s next game. LikeBully 2, there have been many rumors aboutGTA 6and what it will entail, with some fans believing they’ve found clues from Rockstar itself hidden in recent GTA Online updates. Right now, the running theory is thatGTA 6will be set in South Americaand will feature multiple cities, though again, we must stress that nothing official has been announced by Rockstar.

Manhunt 3

Rockstar has mainly focused onGrand Theft AutoandRed Dead Redemptionthis past decade, but the studio has a number of IP under its belt that it could use for its next game. One such IP isManhunt, a stealth-horror series that drummed up considerable controversy back in the day. Despite controversy over its ultra-violent content, the originalManhuntwas relatively well-received by critics, butManhunt 2was less popular, which is perhaps one of the reasons why Rockstar hasn’t moved forward withManhunt 3. However, rumors ofManhunt 3have persisted, and unlike withAgent, Take-Two actually bothered to renew theManhunttrademark back in 2018.Manhunt 3is certainly a possibility, butGTA 6still seems like the more likely candidate.

New Medieval IP

There are rumors about Rockstar’s next game appearing on the Internet basically every day, but most of them involveGrand Theft Auto 6orBully 2. So when a rumor cropped up claiming that Rockstar’s next game would be a new IP in a medieval setting, it caught a lot of attention. Like with any rumors, fans should take this with a massive grain of salt, but it’s still fun to think about the possibilities. After all, Rockstar has largely stuck to modern times with its open world games -Red Dead Redemptionbeing the exception - and so it would be fascinating to see what the company could pull off in something set during the Dark Ages. It would basically be Rockstar’s take onSkyrim, which could appeal to an entire demographic of people who usually skip Rockstar’s games.

TheRockstar Medieval game rumordidn’t provide much details beyond that it would feature sword-fighting as a mechanic and that it’s aiming for a Q1 2021 release. The supposed “leaker” says that an announcement for the game isn’t far off, so maybe we won’t have to wait too long to find out if there’s any truth to their claims.

Something Completely Different

Of course, we can’t rule out the possibility that Rockstar’s next game is something completely different and unexpected. WhileGrand Theft Auto 6certainly seems like the most obvious choice, Rockstar may pull out aTable Tennissequel or maybe it will convert one of its existing games to VR like it did withL.A. Noire. Time will tell, but hopefully fans don’t have to wait too much longer to find out what’s next for Rockstar Games.
