You Are Not My Motheris a new, coming-of-agehorror moviewritten and directed by Kate Dolan in her feature film debut.The movie stars Carolyn Bracken, Ingrid Craigie, and Hazel Doupe and follows a mother-daughter tale plagued bysupernatural entitiesand deadly events. It will have its home video and VOD release on June 21.
Game Rantwas given the opportunity to debut a behind-the-scenes clip featuring scenes fromYou Are Not My Motherand narration by the cast and creators. “We started the casting process back in January and myself and Katie sat down and went: ‘Who do we think would be the best people for this film?’ And we immediately thought Hazel,” shares producer Deirdre Levins in the clip.

In another narration, the character of Char is described as “a 16-year-old girl who is attending school, and she has this strange relationship with her mom.” The voiceover continues, “Then her mom goes missing and comes back, and it’s like this whole [new] world that Char is thrust into, and she has to navigate supernatural entities and battle between reality and fiction, and where she thinks they intertwine.”
Thepsychological thrillerdebuted to critical acclaim at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness selection where it won first runner-up to the body horror movieTitane. Currently onRotten Tomatoes with 70 reviews, the movie has garnered an 89% approval rate with many critics praising its unsettling nature and original storyline. Dolan’s story intertwines Irish folklore with conversations about motherhood and mental illness, set to the horrific backdrop of malicious supernatural happenings.
The synopsis for the movie reads: “It’s the week before Halloween and Char’s (Doupe) mother, Angela (Bracken), has suddenly disappeared, leaving only her car behind. When she returns home without explanation the following evening, it becomes clear to Char and her grandmother, Rita (Craigie), that Angela’s behavior has become increasingly frightening, as if she has been replaced by a malevolent force. When Halloween arrives, Char realizes that she is the only one who can save her mother, even if it means potentially losing her forever.”
