Kazuya Mishima is the latest character to be revealed forSuper Smash Bros Ultimate, making theTekkenveteran the fourth character from an existing fighting game to joinSmash Bros Ultimate. Similar to other guest fighters, a majority of Kazuya’s assets have been painstakingly replicated to fit the 2D platforming gameplay thatSmashis historically known for.

Whilethe transitions from 2D fightersincludingFatal FuryandStreet Fighterhave been faithful recreations asUltimateitself is a 2D game,Tekkentransitions are of a different challenge. Despite its origins as a 2D fighter from the beginning of the series, starting withTekken 4,the series shifted to full 3D movement with Kazuya inSmashbased on hisTekken 7literation. However, the developers were able to successfully commit to as many of his animations and move list from his original game ontoUltimateas possible.

Recently, a fanused several videos from Kazuya’s initial revealas a point of reference to the many moves that the Mishima has inTekken 7, including his signature Electric Wind God Fist. Other moves, including his axe kick, known as “Tsunami Kick,” his “Flash Punch Combo,” and his throws are complete with animations that are as close to the original source material as possible. While his total move list inUltimateis nowhere near as expansive as it is inTekken 7,the attention to detail is impressive when seen from a traditional 2D perspective.

Things become even more incredible when combos are added to the comparisons, showing sample combos accurately recreated inTekken 7as they were initially shown in the Kazuya gameplay trailers. Certain liberties had to be taken, such as Kazuya’s “Air Inferno” command grabin Smash, which is a modified Electric Wind God Fist into his demon laser. OtherTekkenmechanics including his “10-Hit Combo” are also based on hisTekken10-Hit Combo, even to the opponent’s reactions to the attacks.

Super Smash Bros UltimateandTekkenfans alike will have a lot to look forward to on June 28th as theSmashDirect is expected to show more news involving Kazuya and his release date. While other features including potential Mii costumes have yet to be revealed, news involving the future of the series may be revealed as the final DLC character forSmashremains to be announced. Until further announcements are made, fans continue to fantasize about the potential of Kazuya as a character, includingKazuya’sSmashvictory screen.
