On the video game front, theTomb Raiderfranchise has been quiet for some time. While news has been circulating around the series' next film adaptation, no information on a newTomb Raidervideo game has come about for a while — until today.
Square Enix posted a teaser trailer for a new game titledTomb Raider Reloaded, and within seconds it becomes clear what kind of game is being presented. As opposed to a new, full-fledged console release, players will be getting to play as Lara Croft on the go come 2021. Sporting a look resembling the version of Lara from theoriginalTomb Raidergamesas opposed to its modern reboot, the cartoony version of Lara certainly looks different from the one seen in recent years.

While the rest of the trailer reveals little about the gameplay, it does show that the game will be going in a different direction fromthe latestTomb Raidermoviesand modern video games. With a T-Rex depicted in the teaser, a clear nod to an enemy found in the older games, players can clearly expect more of a lighthearted romp withTomb Raider Reloaded. Apart from this, however, little is clear regarding the gameplay of the mobile game, as it could be anything from an endless runner to a top-down shooter.
It is worth noting that this is not Lara Croft’s first venture into mobile territory. Back in 2015,Lara Croft Goreleased, a game focused heavily on puzzle-solving and strategy. While it is unclear what kind of gameTomb Raider Reloadedwill be, the mobile game’s title and Lara’s use of her iconic dual wield pistols would indicate more of an action-oriented gameplay style. How the game plays when it arrives remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see what Emerald City Games does with the title.
WhileTomb Raiderfans will likely have some fun with this mobile game come its release in 2021, there is currently no news on another mainline entry in the series. WithTomb Raiderdeveloper Crystal Dynamics hard at workrebuildingMarvel’s Avengerswith new DLC, it could be some time before another major entry starring one of gaming’s iconic characters is released. For now, this cartoony, dinosaur-filled mobile adventure is the onlyTomb Raidergame on the agenda.
One bit of good news regarding this mobile game is thatTomb Raider Reloadedwill be free-to-play. With no price of admission, trying out Lara’s latest adventure becomes a bit more enticing — even if fans may have wanted a bit more from a newTomb Raiderannouncement.
