On February 29,The Sims 4releasedCrystal Creations, its most recent DLC pack focused on gemstones and jewelry. Players can discover and charge crystals with energy that affect the lives and moods of their Sims, and they can use thenew Gemology skill inThe Sims 4to make magnificent new necklaces and other accessories to customize their characters.
Like most ofThe Sims 4DLC,Crystal Creationsis also full of new decorations, but one in particular has a charming reference toFinal Fantasy 14. A new item in the DLC package called the Spire-Shaped Gemstone has flavor text that describes it as “your very own mini crystal tower that an exarch would be proud of.” Fans ofFF14would immediately recognize this as a reference to the Crystal Tower, a prominent landmark inFinal Fantasy 14that is itself a reference toFF3, as well as the Crystal Exarch, the tower’s keeper. This particular gem was discovered byThe Sims 4fan Rheill and subsequently shared on their personal Twitter.

The Crystal Tower is an incredibly important location inFinal Fantasy 14. It is the setting of the first 24-man raid series fromA Realm Reborn, and it plays a prominent role inShadowbringersas well. The Crystal Exarch, who also appears inShadowbringers, is integral to the plot of the expansion and has gone on to be one of themost popular characters inFinal Fantasy 14.
This isn’t the first timeThe Sims 4has given a nod toFinal Fantasy 14. In 2022, Game producer SimGuruNova added two items inThe Sims 4’sWerewolvesDLC that referencedFF14: Shadowbringers, and she has snuck in other items that did the same withElden Ring,Cyberpunk 2077, and other popular games as well. It is unclear if SimGuruNova was responsible for this new reference, but it would not be a surprise if she was.
WhileCrystal Creationshas been a hit with fans, some players haveworries over recentThe Sims 5leaks, which hint at a more cartoony art style to fit its mobile platforms. Luckily, it seems likeThe Sims 4is still getting plenty of support, and is expected to run concurrently with its mobile successor.
