The Mandalorianseason 3 continues fleshing outStar Wars’ lore and the latest piece uncovered in Chapter 18 will surely be of interest even for the galaxy’s most renowned archeologists as Din Djarin and Bo-Katan ran into a very real Mythosaur. Long believed to be extinct, Mythosaurs are an important piece of Mandalorian history that could define the series’ path moving forward.

See, while it might be easy to think that Mythosaurs are new toStar Wars,The Mandalorianitself has dedicated a few lines to setting up these monsters' entrance into Din Djarin’s story way before Bo-Katan took him to the Living Waters of Mandalore. So, what exactly are Mythosaurs? How powerful are these intergalactic kaiju beasts? And, just how much trouble have these two bounty hunters gotten themselves into by waking up the dormant specimen seen towards the end of season 3’s episode 2?

What Is A Mythosaur?

Mythosaurs technically made theircanon debut inThe Empire Strikes Backas the creature depicted on Boba Fett’s armor, and since then these dinosaur-like monsters have become a treasured part ofThe Mandalorian’sgrowing lore. Nevertheless, it would take quite some time for Mythosaurs to be depicted alive in any form ofStar Warsmedia, as prior to 2013’sThe Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett, they stuck to their dinosaur origins only being represented as fossils or on the clan’s symbols.

That alone helps drive home the idea that Mythosaurs are thought to be extinct, yet they do play a big part in Mandalorian civilization. In the scrappedStar Warsexpanded universe it was his victory over the Mythosaurs that made Mandalore the First the clan’s leader, but now the Disney Plus has retconned those events to have Mandalore the Great’s taming of the wild beasts as one of the tribe’s cultural pillars.

While their underwater abilities are a mystery, if there’s one thing to know about Mythosaurs is that they are huge imposing creatures in combat, which is why gaining control over them, as well as their disappearance are both tipping points in Mandalorian history.

Inseason 3’s episode 2, “The Mines of Mandalore”, Bo-Katan talks about this piece of historical trivia with her usual disdain for Mandalorian traditions when she reads the inscription located in the mines, thinking Mythosaurs are now myths like their name implies, however, this is not the first time the show has referred to these sleeping giants.

HowThe MandalorianTeased The Mythosaur

Besides Mythosaurs being chosen as Mandalorian’s official logo, since season 1 keen-eyed viewers can spot The Armorer always like to keep the monsters' skulls nearby when working. The Mandalorian’sseason 3 premiere repeated thisby showing glimpses of Mythosaurs' heads in the background as well, although that’s not all there is to it.

As early as season 1, Kuiil, the pinkish Ugnaught voiced by Nick Nolte, nods to Mythosaurs when he’s mocking Mando for not being able to ride the lowly blurrgs due to the feats accomplished by his ancestors. Similarly, in Din Djarin’s first appearanceinThe Book of Boba Fett, The Armorertells him another story when she recalls that “The songs of eons past foretold of the mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore.”

With this line, The Armorer infoms the audience that Mythosaurs are regarded by the clan to be asmystical as the Darksaber, hence why season 3’sreveal is likely to so important in the remaining six episodes.

What Comes Next For Mando And Bo-Katan?

It goes without saying that Din Djarin and Bo-Katan are not on the best terms, in fact, when Grogu returns she outright wants to dispose of Mando on the spot. Nevertheless, the Mythosaur’s revival is exactly the kind of event that could convince Bo-Katan to abandon her current beliefs and reconcile with her ancestors' customs, with the way of the creed.

Bo-Katan is more than capable of defeating Mando for the lightsaber, so perhaps she might be interested in taming the Mythosaur herself to regain her status governing over the clan. For Din Djarin, the Mythosaur represents yet anotherconnection with the Mandalorian factions he belongs to, so it’s also another way to atone for his sins.

Having established that, the Mythosaur represents one more item that could spark conflict between Bo-Katan and Din Djarin, hence another motive for opposing Mandalorian groups to face off in a grueling civil war. If either one gains control of the dwelling sea monster, they will become a force to be reckoned with in the galaxy, sothe Living Waters of Mandalore might also bethe last time they don’t see each other as full-on enemies

If Jon Favreau and company opt for a lessbelligerent narrative storyline, the Mythosaurs can help bring Bo-Katan and Mando closer together as each one reconsiders their views over their heritage. In any case, the next episode in season 3 will see them trying to escape this mighty monster, which is probably their main concern for now.
