Super Smash Bros.is one of the biggest fighting game franchises in history. With several different characters and series represented across the Nintendo multiverse, including some third party guests, the series has accumulated a large fan following.Smash’s unique take on the fighting game genre has also inspired other fighting games in the similar vein, such asNickelodeon All-Star Brawl, andthe upcoming Warner Bros. crossover brawlerMultiVersus.

The originalSuper Smash Bros.launched on Nintendo 64 in January 1999, and original only had a roster of 12 characters from Nintendo’s elite franchises, such asMario,The Legend of Zelda,Pokemon, andMetroid. With the release ofSuper Smash Bros. However, mods for the originalSuper Smash Bros.seek to bring fighters from future installments to the original game. The YouTube channel Smash Remix has been hard at work since 2019 to bring characters from later games, such as Ganondorf, Wario, and Bowser back to the first title in the series. Now, the newest character to be added in the most recent patch is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic originally debuted inSmashwithSuper Smash Bros. Brawlon the Wii, and has since become a staple of the series’ roster. This isn’t the first time Sonic has crossed over with other video game titles, with the character appearing in titles likeSuper Monkey Ball Banana Mania,Angry Birds, and evenFall Guys.

Sonic’s inclusion in this Smash Remix mod is an incredible achievement, retaining many of the character’s trademark move-set from his appearance in later games, such as his spin dash and ability to turn into Super Sonic. His appearance in the trailer is also accompanied by a rearrangement of the track “Live and Learn”fromSonic Adventure 2, now in a charming Nintendo 64 sound-font.

While there are currentlyno plans for anotherSuper Smash Brosgamefollowing the release ofUltimate’s final DLC, it’s fun to see fan-made creations like Smash Remix thrive with other players, and will continue to contribute the franchise’s longevity for years to come.

Super Smash Bros.is available for the Nintendo 64.
