In-game footage of the remastered version of Insomniac Games’Spider-Manfor PS5 was shown off today. While some liked what they saw, one of the remastered clips was met with irritation from some fans when it was revealed Peter Parker’s face had been redesigned. One comparison that many are making relates to the similarities between the newSpider-Mancharacter model and Spider-Man’s current live-action actor.
Insomniac Games explained why it decided tochange Peter Parker’s face, but this hasn’t stopped fans from reacting online. Many believe this new version of the character model looks a lot younger than the previous version on the PS4. This game is meant to take place several years after Peter Parker first became Spider-Man, thus it makes sense in the narrative for the character to look older.

The character redesign looks younger by comparison, and at the same time, it bears a somewhat striking resemblance toTom Holland, the actor currently portraying Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While his portrayal has been met favorably by many, Holland’s “appearance” in theSpider-Manremaster could be seen as annoying to those fans who feel Peter Parker’s character model in the PS4 version felt rather unique to that game in particular.
For some fans, the decision to replaceYuri Lowenthalwith Ben Jordan as the motion and facial capture performer for the character is rather strange. While Lowenthal is still voicing the character, Insomniac went back and redid the facial capture using Jordan, due to issues with remastering the game for next-gen.
No other characters have been redesigned, likely becuase no other character has Peter’s prominence, though it’s always possible that could change in the future. The remasteredSpider-Manfootage showed the design of Doc Ockto be the same as the previous version of the game. Though, until the game is officially released, there’s no way to know for sure if any other character models had to be revised due to issues with facial capture.
In any case, it doesn’t really seem like the redesign will impact the overall experience of the game. For many fans, it would have been nice to have consistency in terms of character design across both versions of the game, it honestly seems like a minor issue comparatively. In addition toSpider-Man: Miles Morales, fans of the original game on the PS4 have a lot to look forward to.
Spider-Manwill release on November 12th, 2020 for the PS5 and is currently available for the PS4.
