Insomniac is already hard at work onMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, with an estimated launch date of sometime in 2023. After the blockbuster success of the original game in 2018, and then the equally enjoyable spin-offMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moraleslate last year, expectations are understandably sky high. The reveal trailer forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2that premiered during the latest State of Play back teased a darker tone, co-op elements, and the appearance of new villains like Venom.
The next adventure for the wall-crawler isn’t the only Marvel project that Insomniac is tackling however, as during that same aforementioned State of Play, it was also announced that the studio will be developingMarvel’s Wolverine. Considering that both games will be made under the roof of Insomniac’s studio, many fans jumped to the conclusion of a possible crossover or cameo between the two characters. The Marvel universe is well known for connecting and integrating multiple characters and storylines, so it is possible. However, it is worth considering that while this would elevateMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, there is just as much of a danger of it harming the overall experience.

Wolverine Would be a Marvelous Addition
It may seem like the most basic of justifications, but Wolverine showing up inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2would be a great inclusion just for being downright cool. The feral mutant is one ofMarvel’s most beloved and popular superheroes, with a comic book history as rich and engaging as the web-slinger. Based on the reveal trailer forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, both Peter and Miles will have their hands full with a legion of new villains. Venom and Kraven the Hunter have been teased, with fan theories believing that Green Goblin and Lizard will also be on the prowl in the sequel.
This onslaught of new enemies may be too much forPeter and Milesto handle alone, resulting in Spider-Man having to call on some extra help from Wolverine. Peter has been traveling abroad, with his absence being a major subplot inMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. In his travels, Peter may have crossed paths with Wolverine, making a newfound ally in the adamantium-infused mutant. It could be a stretch, but even a small cameo in a cutscene or two would certainly send players into a flurry of excitement.

Wolverine May Distract From the Narrative in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
All that being said, there is the flip side of the coin that Wolverine’s inclusion would harm the game more than help it. As stated, Wolverine is popular just like Spider-Man and is just as capable of chewing up the scenery. There is a risk of the character potentially stealing the spotlight from Spider-Man within his own game if he were to be included too heavily. Look no further than the massive ensemble films in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, in which some characters could arguably be seen as stealing the show over others.
Wolverine’s popularity aside, including him in a meaningful way could also be a difficult task from a writing perspective. The sequel already has numerous plot threads to juggle, with the fallout ofDoc Ock’s plan, why Peter was traveling abroad, and the mystery behind what happened to Harry Osborn. All this will likely make for a packed adventure, so squeezing another major player into the mix may distract from other pivotal elements in the story.
A small hint toInsomniac’s upcomingMarvel’s Wolverinein the form of an easter egg or even being mentioned in a radio broadcast by Jameson would be fine, but something larger than that could be a tight fit for what is already set to be a massive game. It remains to be seen just how ambitiousMarvel’s Spider-Man 2will ultimately be, but it is likely to be a great sequel regardless of if a certain merry mutant makes an appearance.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is scheduled to release in 2023 on PS5.
