It looks like Ryan Reynolds is looking to diversify hissportsportfolio, as the Hollywood actor is rumoured to be interested in acquiring the Ottawa Senators if reports that the NHL team going up for sale are true.

Of course, this wouldn’t be Reynolds' firstsportsventure, as he and friend Rob McElhenney purchased the modest Welsh football team AFC Wrexham back in 2020, adding to the actor’s several businesses like Aviation Gin, Mint Mobile, and his production company Maximum Effort. Reynolds' Wrexham purchase has surely been his most high-profile investment, not because of monetary reasons, but instead due to the success of theWelcome to Wrexhamdocuseriesthat chronicles the team’s quest to escape the lower depths of English football.

Evidently,a Canadian NHL franchisewould demand a much bigger investment than the $2.64 million Reynolds and McElhenney put forward for Wrexham. Yet, according toPeople, Reynolds would be very interested if the Ottawa Senators were put up for sale. The opportunity apparently comes after the death of Eugene Melnyk’s death, the team’s former owner who left the Senators to his two daughters, who are now deep into determining a selling price. To make the matter more interesting, this was Reynolds' response when asked about it on Twitter:

The Senators were last valued at $655 million bySportico, 21% up from a previous appraisal of $500 million. So, while Reynolds may not have that kind of cash in hand, he could play a decisive role in raising funds and finding investors interested in pitching in to turn the team into a bigger media sensation, much like Wrexham is becomingin the world of football. Reynolds grew up in Vancouver, Canada, and though he has no direct ties to Ottawa, keeping the Senators in the city would be a key point for any bid he takes part in.

The Ottawa Senators take their name after a defunct NHL team founded in 1883 in the earliest days of the sport and, having won 11 Stanley Cups before World War II began, the franchise has a rich history, far more glorious than Wrexham’s. Selling the team won’t be that easy, as before his passing Eugene Melnyk and the Senators were caught up in a lawsuit over a failed project involving a new arena with a company called LeBreton Flats, with the controversy now being a one-billion-dollar headache any new owner would have to deal with.

Nevertheless, the prospect of Reynolds becoming an NHL owner is rather tantalizing, especially if it comes bundled with wholesomeentertainment likeWelcome to Wrexham, which was already renewed for another season.
