After figuring outhow to make a mop,Return to Monkey Islandplayers will be tasked with disguising Guybrush so that he can join the crew of LeChuck’s pirate ship. Sadly, however, simple cosmetics just won’t cut it on this occasion, meaning that players will need to think outside the box if they’re to have any chance of tricking the ghostly quartermaster who’s standing in their way.

As is often the case inMonkey Islandgames, players will need to resort to using voodoo magic, as well as a special item that can be found hidden somewhere on Melee Island. In order to get their hands on it though, they’ll first need to solve a few tricky puzzles and must then consult with the Voodoo Lady in order to figure out a way to restore the item’s identity concealing magic.
How to Disguise Guybrush in Return to Monkey Island
If they didn’t already do so earlier while building their own mop, players will need to get their hands on twoMonoclesas well as aCarnivorous Plant. The latter can be acquired by using the knife with one of the green plants in the Deep Dark Forest area where players carved their mop handle, while the Monocles can be taken from the box on Wally’s desk at the map shop on Low Street. Players will need to exit and then re-enter the store after taking the first monocle in order to make the second one show up.
Assuming that players already have the aforementioned items, they should make their way over to the Museum of Pirate Lore, which can be found in the same area as the entrance to the Deep Dark Forest. Once inside, they should open up their inventory and combine the two Monocles, then use theDouble Monocleto read the tiny numbers above the lock on the display case. Next, they’ll want to head into the storeroom via the door in the back right-hand corner of the museum and grab theCracker Mixfrom the shelf on the left.

Players may need to have spoken with the locksmith before being able to examine the tiny numbers on the display case or the ones beneath the lock on the door of Otis' jail cell.
At this point, players should make their way back to the locksmith opposite the jail in the High Street area and hand over the scrap of paper with the serial number on it to receive theMuseum Display Case Key. They’ll also need to give the locksmith the cracker mix, after which she will allow Guybrush to help himself to theCrackerson the plate beneath the parrot. With these two items now in hand, the time has come to return to the museum and steal the main item that’s needed for Guybrush’s cunning disguise.

Once at the museum, players should feed the parrot a cracker and then quickly use the key to unlock the display case and steal theEyepatch. If they fail to feed the parrot a cracker or take too long to open up the case and take the patch after doing so, it will sound the alarm and alert the museum’s curator to Guybrush’s thievery, forcing players to leave and then re-enter the museum in order to reset the puzzle.
While at the museum, series fans may want to take a moment to examine some of the familiar items that are scattered around the premises. Doing so will provide them with a chance to reminisce about some of Guybrush’s past adventures, with plenty of references tothe first twoMonkey Islandgamesjust waiting to be found. This is entirely optional though, so those who are in a hurry can leave as soon as they’ve gotten their hands on the eyepatch if they so wish.

Whenever they’re ready, players should make their way back to the Dock area and then put on the eyepatch while near LeChuck’s ship. Unfortunately, however, the eyepatch doesn’t seem to be working as intended, so players will need to take it tothe Voodoo Ladyon the High Street to get it fixed. She’ll ask for the Bite of a Thousand Needles, at which point, players should hand over the carnivorous plant that they got from the Deep Dark Forest in order to proceed.
After a short cutscene and an unconventional voodoo spell, the eyepatch will be returned to its former glory, allowingGuybrushto take on a zombie-like appearance while wearing it. At this point, players can make their way back over to the docks and put on the eyepatch as before. Unlike last time though, Guybrush’s appearance will completely change, and showing the homemade mop to the quartermaster will lead to him being hired immediately.

Those hoping to complete all of the smaller tasks on Guybrush’s TODO list may want to hold off on returning to the quartermaster until they’ve done so, as getting hired as a swabbie will immediately bring about the end of Part 1. When players next gain control of the mighty pirate, the ship will have already set sail from Melee Island, which brings about Part 2 ofReturn to Monkey Island, A Dangerous Journey.
