An unluckyRed Dead Redemption 2player recently caught a bounty just for defending themselves from an unprovoked attacker. Rockstar’s open-world Western epic is widely considered one of the greatest video games of the modern era thanks to its detailed landscape and well-written story that tells of outlaw Arthur Morgan during the decline of the Old West. It carries with it the record-breaking commercial success to match this reputation, asRed Dead Redemption 2has sold over 50 million copiessince it launched on the eighth generation of consoles way back in 2018.

Just like Rockstar’s other major sandbox franchise,Grand Theft Auto,Red Dead Redemption 2gives players a fully-realized virtual world to explore and interact with however they see fit. This includes the player being able to commit less-than-savory acts that wouldn’t be too out of place in the real Wild West, such as killing civilians andperforming robberies on horseback. However, these aspiring criminals are punished throughRed Dead Redemption 2’s Bounty and Wanted systems, which have law enforcement hunt Arthur down if he performs too many ill deeds in front of witnesses.

While these systems are meant to ensure justice is carried out in the world ofRed Dead Redemption 2, sometimes the player is punished for something that wasn’t their fault to begin with. Such was the case with Reddit user Rylancoolman69, who shared a video of their brief run-in with a knife-wielding NPC. Said NPC attacks Arthur seemingly unprovoked, forcing the hardened mercenary to pistol whip him in self-defense. However, Rylancoolman69 earns a bounty of $5.00 for their actions, and the police officer nearby begins shooting at them despite having witnessed a clear case of self-preservation.

Other players in the comment section of Rylancoolman69’s post have shared their own experiences withRed Dead Redemption 2’s less-than-perfect legal system, with some even complaining that the one found inGrand Theft Auto 5is more rooted in sound logic despite that game coming out 10 years prior. Luckily, there seem to be a few mods available on the PC version of the game that make the Wanted system more realistic and allow players to defend themselves without punishment from the law.

Unfortunately for Rylancoolman69, it seems that said law had different priorities after witnessing Arthur Morganfend off an attacker inRed Dead Redemption 2. The Old West may be a brutal setting where law and order often take a backseat to gunfire and quick escapes, and it seems that Arthur can find himself a wanted man even if the other person started the trouble.

Red Dead Redemption 2is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
