There’s a lot riding on the DLC forPokemon ScarletandViolet,as it looks to improve upon the missteps ofPokemon SwordandShield’s DLC. With many fans hoping to finally see a return to Kalos, the announcement that The Teal Mask takes place in a new land called Kitakami as The Indigo Disk sees players head to Blueberry Academy dashed those dreams. However, the DLC forPokemon ScarletandVioletstill has an opportunity to inject some ofPokemon XandY’s flair by bringing back a pair of trainers native to the Kalos region.
The trainers in question are Dexio and Sina, two of Professor Sycamore’s assistants who appear as recurring characters throughoutXandY. These unassuming characters are not the most memorable, but hold the potential to become significantly more important with the right character development. While Dexio and Sina may not seem all that important to their home region, they’ve made appearances across multiple generations, and their alter egos as the defenders of Kalos make them prime candidates to appear inThe Teal Mask DLC.

Why Dexio and Sina Could Be Perfect for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Teal Mask
Longtime fans will have first encountered this duo inPokemon XandYjust outside of Lumious City, where they give the player the TM for Return and escort them to Professor Sycamore’s lab. While they may seem like mild-mannered lab assistants, they appear later on in the games as the defenders of Kalos to help the player battle Team Flare. These masked alter egos give Dexio and Sina a more interesting character trait, one that is unfortunately not explored further in their other appearances.
The duo make another stop in the Alola region ofPokemon SunandMoon, as well asPokemon Ultra SunandUltra Moon. Players will encounter these trainers in Heahea City where after a battle, they offer up the Zygarde Cube so that players can collectZygarde Cells and Coresaround the region. It seems like their role in these games are mainly to explain features from the previous gen, as players meet them again on Poni Island to learn about Mega Evolution.
The way these Gen 7 games feature the pair does a disservice to their character, because they completely discards their superhero alter egos. The Teal Mask is the perfect chance to bring back the defenders of Kalos, as the festival in Kitakami seems to featureSuper Sentai-esque masks ofOkidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti, and Ogerpon, potentially setting up an encounter with the masked duo. It would be great to see these two appear again as their alter egos and aid the player on their journey through the mysterious land of Kitakami.
Not only would the inclusion of Dexio and Sina in their superhero forms fit thematically with The Teal Mask’s aesthetic, but it would also help get some sort of reference to Kalos intoPokemon ScarletandViolet. It’s a shame their defender personas haven’t made an appearance outside ofPokemon XandY,as they are the most interesting aspect of their characters. Even if players won’t be returning to Kalos in theDLC forPokemon ScarletandViolet, maybe a bit of Kalos can be brought to the players by offering these two trainers the increased roles they deserve.
