Among all thePokemon Scarlet and Violetrumors, speculation, and fan art, one common and intriguing recurring theme is which Pokemon will get new forms and regional variants. Many are hoping for anew Eeveelution inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, while others think Pokemon like Miltank and Tauros will get a new form.
The latter is for a very specific reason. It’s well-known already thatPokemon Scarlet and Violetare based on Spain, in some shape or form. How much Spanish culture predominantly makes its way into the game remains to be seen, but there will certainly be undertones at the very least. One way some fans are hoping this culture is reflected in the game comes alongside its Unown.

While Pokemon get new forms every generation, the Unown haven’t changed since their inclusion inPokemon Gold and Silver. Fans know that there is an Unown corresponding to every letter of the alphabet, plus an exclamation mark and a question mark. WithPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Spanish origins, many are hoping to see Spanish characters get their own Unown (as seen below, in matedetoni’s Reddit post).
Redditor matedetoni proposed thatPokemon Scarlet and Violetadd anew Unown formbased on a Spanish question mark. Others in the thread also pointed out other good inclusions like an Unown based on the Spanish exclamation mark or the eñe mark: ¿, ¡, and Ñ/ñ, respectively. Of course, whether or not this happens remains to be seen, but it would be a nice way to give Unown new regional variants and have them play a bigger role in this gen than past ones—if it were somehow connected to the story.
Of course, even less is known about the story than the region. Many have filled this hole with various ideas like two legendary bull Pokemon, as well as speculated that thePokemon Scarlet and Violetstarters could be based on a Cucafera(Fuecoco), a Flamenco dancer (Sprigatito), and/or Don Quixote (Quaxly). However, until Nintendo showcases more of the region, how close or how far off fans are is a big question mark in and of itself.
After all, whilePokemon regions are usually based on a particular real-world area, it mixes in plenty of creative liberties with its real-world inspirations. What is clear from all of this is that fans are excited to see whatPokemonGen 9 has in store.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare scheduled to release in late 2022 for Nintendo Switch.
