There are fewPokemonmore iconic than Mewtwo. Ever since its central role inPokemon: The First Movie, the psychic-typePokemonhas been a fan favorite. Now, one fan has managed to meticulously craft an incredibly accurate Mewtwo cosplay and decided to show it off via Reddit.
Just last month, cosplayer Willow Creative postedstills of their impressive Mewtwo costume, and it was immediately received as one of the most impressive Pokemon cosplays in a long time. It’s difficult enough for cosplayers to accurately recreate most human characters, but to bring to life a character like Mewtwo is another feat entirely. Unsurprisingly, Willow detailed the entire process of creating the Mewtwo costume, stating that they first sketched the entire costume out in 3D using Maya, and followed up by using a 3D printer to craft Mewtwo’s head.

The gigantic spoon—a classic trademark of psychic-type Pokemon—left many commenters confused because it’s mostly associated by fans with the character Alakazam. However, in the long-running manga,Pokemon Adventures, Mewtwo actually uses it as a weapon to devastating effect. Willow’s spoon is made from a thick layer of foam laid over an aluminum slat which was then painted in three layers. The result is a realistic-looking spoon that is completely bendable, and posable, with paint that doesn’t crack.
Besides the giant spoon, the costume is also outfitted with glowing blue eyes that can be seen whenever the Pokemon is activating its psychic powers. In Willow’s costume, the lights are activated by Mewtwo’s eyebrows which are controlled by the wearer’s jaw movement. While these niche details are impressive on their own, the bulk of the costume itself might be even more admirable since it was hand-sculpted from foam and then painstakingly assembled by gluing it to an undersuit. As though this wasn’t enough, Willow managed to put together a set of futuristic-looking armor that fits over the costume that was inspired by theMewtwo Strikes Backmovie.
Willow’s incredible cosplay efforts extend far beyond the Pokemon franchise. They have also done cosplay of Akali fromLeague of Legends, Spyro fromSpyro the Dragon, and even Rivet fromRatchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Just this morning, Willow finished their long-awaited costume ofFran fromFinal Fantasy 12.
