APokemonfan and artist has designed middle evolutions for three Generation 1 Pokemon: Tentacool, Vulpix, and Rattata. ThePokemonfranchise isn’t exactly consistent when it comes to how evolution works. There are some Pokemon with three forms, some with only two, and others that don’t evolve at all.

This was true for thePokemonfranchise right out of the gate. The Generation 1Pokemongames had all kinds of variety when it came to evolution lines and even how Pokemon evolve in the games. Some Pokemon are evolved by leveling them up, others are evolved by trading, and others still are evolved by exposing them to stones. In any case, these inconsistencies with Pokemon evolution have led to some impressive fan art over the years, with fans designingevolutions to existing Pokemonor filling the gaps between evolutions.

This is what Reddit user Tonny_Art has done with some of their latestPokemonfan art. The Reddit user has created middle evolutions for Tentacool,Vulpix, and Rattata, in turn creating a cleaner transition from those Pokemon to their evolved forms of Tentacruel, Ninetales, and Raticate, respectively. For instance, Vulpix and Ninetales have completely different color schemes, but the newly-created middle evolution for the Vulpix line helps bridge the gap between the two by featuring both Vulpix’s colors and Ninetales'.

Not only have fans created new evolutions for Generation 1 Pokemon, but Game Freak and The Pokemon Company have done the very same thing. A selection of “baby Pokemon” were introduced in Generation 2 that gave some Generation 1 Pokemon pre-evolutions that didn’t exist in the original games. This included Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby, who are pre-evolutions for Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee, Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar, respectively.

With theGeneration 4Pokemongames, new evolutions for Generation 1 Pokemon were added to the mix. This included Magnezone, Lickilicky, Rhyperior, Tangrowth, Electivire, and Magmortar, who are the evolved forms of Magneton, Lickitung, Rhydon, Tangela, Electabuzz, and Magmar.

It’s possible that future Pokemon will provide even more new official evolutions or pre-evolutions for Generation 1 Pokemon. The persistent popularity of the Generation 1 Pokemon lineup has seen the developers return to that well multiple times, after all. It’s unlikely that any of these potential new evolutions for Generation 1 Pokemon will be part of theupcomingPokemon Scarlet and VioletDLC, but perhaps the Generation 10 games will have some new ones to add to the mix. Fans will just have to wait and see on that front.
