Quick Links
Most of the Bug-type Pokemon in thePokemonworld have very low base stat totals and are weak to many common Pokemon such as Flying-type or Rock-type. However, there are some strong Bug-types, such as the Bug/Steel-type Scizor. SincePokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlinclude the Fairy-type, Scizor’s Steel-typing gives it an advantage over Fairy-type Pokemon.
Scizor first appeared inPokemon Gold/Silverand was the evolved form of Scyther. Its method of evolving hasn’t changed inBrilliant Diamond&Shining Pearl, which makes it difficult for some gamers who prefer playing alone. Unfortunately forShining Pearlplayers, Scyther is aBrilliant Diamond-exclusive Pokemon, which means they’ll need to get Scyther (or Scizor) in a trade.

Finding & Evolving Scyther
There are two different locations that Scyther will spawn inBrilliant Diamond. Thanks to its Bug-typing, Scyther can be caught with Net Balls, which have a 3.5% catch rate when used on Bug or Water-type Pokemon. Scyther lives onRoute 229as a rare Wild Encounter. It has a5% chance of appearingin the morning, day, and night. Since Route 229 is only accessible in the post-game, Scyther will be around level 52.
For those who want Scytherbeforetaking on the Elite Four, Scyther will appear as arare spawn (30% appearance rate)in the following hideaways of the Grand Underground:

(*) Scyther appears in Sunlit Cavernin the post-game.
In the Grand Underground, Scyther’s level will be determined by the number of gym badges the player has. Its level can be from 16 (no badges) to 63 (all eight badges).
To evolve it, players will need totrade Scyther while it’s holding the Metal Coat item. The definite way of getting aMetal Coatoccurs after getting the National Dex. Sail toIron Island, thengo to Riley’s House and speak with Byron.
The other method is to go to theGrand Undergroundand look for Bronzor, Magnemite, or Beldum. These Pokemon have a5% chance of carrying a Metal Coat. Use Thief to steal it from them, or catch them and see if they’re carrying the item.
With this done, have Scyther hold the Metal Coat and go to theLocal or Global Trading Roomsat any Pokemon Center. Trade Scyther so it can evolve into Scizor. ForShining Pearlplayers, this is the only way to get both Scyther and Scizor.

More Information About Scyther & Scizor
Before it evolves, Scyther has the Bug/Flying-typing. As Scizor, it becomes Bug/Steel instead. Both Scyther and Scizor have a base stat total of500. The difference is that Scyther has less Attack and Defense, but it’s faster than Scizor.
While it was possible for Scizor to Mega Evolve back in generations 6-7,Mega Evolution still has yet to make a returnin generation 8. Mega Scizor would raise its 500 base stat total to 600, increasing its Attack, Defense, and Special Defense.

Special Defense:80
Speed:65
Both Scyther and Scizor are Physical Attackers, and all of their moves (except for Air Slash) deal Physical damage. For Scizor, anAdamant (+Attk, -Sp.Attk)Nature is preferred. Meanwhile, Scyther makes better use of aJolly (+Spd, -Sp.Attk)Nature. However, Jolly can work for Scizor too depending on its moveset.
Since Scyther is Bug/Flying and Scizor is Bug/Steel-type, they both have a 4x weakness to Rock and Fire-type respectively. When battling, it’s best to avoid having them go up against these two types since a single Rock or Fire-type move could wipe them out in one hit. For coverage against Rock-type, Scyther can learn Steel Wing from TM47. Unfortunately,Scizor can’t learn Ground-type moves like Earthquaketo counter against Fire-types. Meaning the best strategy to take out a Fire-type with Scizor is by striking first and hitting hard.

Between the two, Scyther is preferred for trainers who want a fast, hard-hitting Pokemon. Its dual-type allows it to have an advantage over its own type (Bug-type), but this also gains it a hearty weakness to the common Rock-type.
Trainers looking for a Pokemon withmany resistances and only one weaknesswill want to pick Scizor. Although Scizor has a 4x weakness to Fire, its sturdy defense and high attack coupled with a solid moveset make it a good asset to the team.
