After months of waiting, Sony has finally shared itsPS5console design, but fans still find themselves left with more questions than answers. For one, the design itself is bizarre, with wide angles that seem directly in contrast to the sleek, angular look of the PS4. Beyond that, though, is the question of its color. Many had correctly assumed that the console itself would be two-toned (black and white) because of theDualSense’s color scheme, and while this has been confirmed, there are plenty wondering whether the console and controller will come in monochrome white or black options.

Sony’s The Future of Gaming event was one of the most anticipated gaming events of the year The hype built up for the release of thePS5and next generation content is overflowing right now, and the event did not disappoint in any way. Now that the actual, official design of the PS5 is known, fans have moved right on to the next big question when it comes to aesthetics: will there be multiple color options? The confusion is compounded by the image used to promote The Future of Gaming event, which showed what seemed to be an all black DualSense controller.

PS5 DualSense Controller

Though the DualSense’s two-tone, black and white color scheme was praised by many, there were a good deal of people that thought it was the wrong move. Many went so far as to call it ugly, while others vehemently defended the design choice. That’s why whenSony first teased the PS5 reveal event, a lot of attention was drawn to the seemingly black variant of the DualSense controller shown. Unfortunately, there is now confusion over whether or not the controller is actually black or if it is just a lighting trick.

On the one hand, it could be that the controller shown is the standard black and white DualSense controller, and that it only looks black due to the dark lighting added for effect. This would likely be seen as an affront to fans that wereexcited about an all black controller reveal, however, so hopefully this is not the case. Those same critics that weren’t a fan of the DualSense controller likely have similar feelings about the console’s two-tone design, but if the controller is in fact all black, then the likelihood of an all black PS5 design increases significantly.

PlayStation Alternate Colors

Sony’s PlayStation consoles have a history of being available in multiple color schemes, so there is certainly precedent for that in the PS5 as well. Typically speaking, PlayStations launch in one color (usually black), but then release in other colors later on. This was the case for theGlacier White variant of the PS4, as well as the white PS3 models, but other colors have been explored as well. There was even a line of very brightly colored PS3s that were available for a short time. Of course, given the PS5’s default two-toned nature, it is in a slightly different position than its predecessors.

Normally there is a gap between the release of a console and its alternate colors. Also, it is not uncommon for aPlayStation to launch with white controllersbut not with a white console variant. Because of this, it moves the potential for an all black PS5 further into uncertainty, but still not out of the realm of possibility. Really, until an official announcement is made about the colors it will be available in, fans will just need to wait, as conjecture is all that’s available right now.

All Black PS5 Console

The above fan concept, for example, highlights how many want to see a Black PS5 console soon-ish. More likely than that, however, is that the system comes out with just the default two-tone and that more colors will be added later alongsidelimited edition PS5s with special designs. How long fans will have to wait for an alternate color is unclear, as there is little consistency in the history of alternate color schemes. Still, a lot is changing about the gaming industry right now, so it certainly shouldn’t be ruled out.

It could be that the PS5 will launch with two colors, perhaps the default and an all black version, or it could launch in only the default state. At the moment it is difficult to say, as the only evidence surrounding a black PS5 is the existence of the black DualSense controller, and even that has come under scrutiny about whether or not it is true. If there’sone thing Sony has shown that it does well, however, it is listening to fans, so more likely than not it has caught wind of the distaste some feel towards the two-toned designs.

Whether or not Sony misled viewers by darkening the shot of the DualSense is difficult to say, in part because it depends on whether or not the controller is actually black or still the familiar black and white design already shown. Working off the assumption that it is not black (and only looks so because of the lighting), that would be somewhat upsetting. Many have already voiced theirfrustration over the DualSense color scheme, so for Sony to take that and tease something which won’t end up existing is pretty cruel.

The bottom line, however, is that even if there is anall black DualSense controller, that doesn’t guarantee the existence of an all black PS5, as the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Obviously, the more options that are available, the better, but this is simply to say that there’s not any concrete evidence to either confirm or deny the existence of that design. Sony does plan on sharing new information soon, and with its biggest secret now out of the bag, fans may well hear about alternate designs and new games very soon.
