Summary

The Mythic skins available fromOverwatch 2’s premium battle passes have gone down well with fans since the sequel launched, but some stunning animation work produced by fans demonstrate that these rare cosmetic items have the potential to be much more. Though the overhaul to monetization inOverwatch 2has been hugely controversial, these Mythic skins go a long way to give each seasonal battle pass its own appeal.

Mythic skins are a new rarity of skins above Legendary items, and were first introduced whenOverwatch 2launched in early access late last year. Genji’s Cyberdemon skin was the first item in this category of rarity, allowing fans of the Shimada brother to customize his skin’s appearance, color, and weapon visuals. This level of customization, along with a plethora of new and unique lines of dialogue, have remained details that are consistent with every Mythic skin released so far. WhileOverwatch 2’s battle pass system is no doubt a controversial additionto the game, these Mythic skins have helped to bolster the theme of every new season, as new Mythic skins are exclusively available from the premium battle pass.

Still, fans have long compared theoften-disappointing quality ofOverwatch 2’s skinsto the standards set by other multiplayer games, and some awesome fanmade animations for the game’s Mythic skins go to show that Blizzard is absolutely leaving potential on the table when it comes to these premium cosmetics. This fanmade work was shown off in a post on Twitter, and was produced as a result of the collaboration between two 3D artists known as PistonFX_ and Jupiiit. The post features a number of default character animations compared with these fanmade ones, which show overhauls to certain characters' weapon and ability animations when donning their Mythic skins.

These fanmade animations are really creative, utilizingunique aspects ofOverwatch 2’s Mythic skins' designsto give a whole new flair to heroes' abilities. This work goes to show how much potential future Mythic skins could have inOverwatch 2if Blizzard decided to give Mythic skins unique animations.

While the battle pass system and the other changes to monetization inOverwatch 2were enough to put many players off of the game, it has been the many disruptive bugs and hero balancing changes seen in newer seasons that seem to be a big part of whyOverwatch 2’s player count is unfortunately dropping. It will be interesting to see if future seasons can turn things around for the hero shooter.

Overwatch 2is available in early access on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
