In the recentOne Piecechapters, Oda has mainly focused on the events that took place in Marijoa during the Reverie. Oda revealed tiny bits of information in the Reverie arc and the Wano Country arc. But it wasn’t until the Egghead Island arc that theOne Pieceauthor decided to cover the events in depth. The biggest news to come out of the Reverie was definitelythe death of Nefertari Cobra, the blame for which was put on the shoulders of Sabo.

The World Government believed it was a good idea to paint Sabo as the culprit, but it ended up increasing his reputation. While the fans knew that the World Government was involved in Cobra’s death, it was unclear why the organization killed one of the most influential leaders in the world.

The Assassination

Nefertari Cobra made his way to Marijoa to attend the Reverie and to talk with the Five Elders. He went into the room, hoping to learn the answers to his questions. Little did he know that this would be the last time that he would ever get the opportunity to see the outside world. As soon as he entered, Cobra asked the Five Elders about Nefertari Lily but received no real answer from them. Cobra proceeded to ask another question, and this time it was about the D.

Before the Five Elders could say anything, Imu appeared andsat on the Empty Throne. They told Cobra about Lily’s big mistake that caused the Poneglyphs to be released throughout the world. Imu was skeptical about whether Lily had just made a blunder or if it was part of some plan. Following the reveal, Cobra also disclosed that the complete name of Lily was Nefertari D. Lily, prompting an attack from Imu and the Five Elders. Sabo tried to fight them off, but he couldn’t make a difference. So, Cobra decided to sacrifice himself, and before doing so, he told Sabo to inform Vivi and Luffy about their lineage. The king of Alabasta gave Sabo enough time to escape from the room.

The Queen of Alabasta

The most interesting development from Cobra’s conversation with Imu was about Nefertari Lily. Fans were already aware that Alabasta was among the twenty nations that allied together to defeat the Great Kingdom. As the queen of Alabasta, Lily was also involved in the demolition, but when the time came to put her weapon around the Empty Throne, she refused to do so. Lily alsodeclined the offer to stay in Marijoa, and decided to go back to Alabasta. However, Cobra confirmed that she never made it to Alabasta, which implies that she was killed by someone within the World Government.

A major reason for her assassination was the big blunder that she committed. According to Imu, Lily made the mistake of releasing the Poneglyphs into the world. This faux pas created a massive problem for the World Government. It gave the pirates and other people an opportunity to find the true history of the world. Considering the fact that she was supposed to be an ally of the World Government, she wouldn’t just betray them out of the blue.

Talking To Joy Boy

The most logical explanation would be that she was convinced by someone to goagainst Imu and the Five Elders. The only other person who could have known the true intentions of the alliance would have been Joy Boy. The enigmatic figure existed around the same time, and he very likely belonged to the Great Kingdom. Joy Boy even made a promise to the people of Fish-Man Island that he failed to fulfill because he was very likely killed.

Before his death, Joy Boy probably met Lily and told her about the meaning of D. and the role that Alabasta had to play. Lily might not have believed him if she didn’t have suspicions of her own. Joy Boy’s explanation motivated her to release the Poneglyphs into the world. Otherwise, she would never commit such a foolish blunder. Sadly, both Lily and Joy Boy died, and records of their existence were erased by the World Government.

The Responsibility

Following the death of Nefertari Cobra, the throne of Alabasta is vacant. Vivi is next in line to inherit it, but she cannot go back to her homeland as she is being hunted by the World Government. Cobra confirmed that Vivi also belongs to the D. Clan, which means that she is automatically a target for the World Government. She has shown her mental resilience in the Alabasta arc, but the upcoming challenges are going to be far worse.

ConsideringImu is desperate to get their hands on her, it is fair to say that they fear Vivi’s existence mainly because they believe that she has Lily’s will. It is a common theme inOne Piecethat the will of the dead is inherited by those who come after them. With that said, there is no doubt that Vivi is going to play a crucial role in the story. She will achieve what her ancestor couldn’t and lead Alabasta toward the dawn. Vivi’s journey is intertwined with Luffy’s adventure. Cobra specifically mentioned Luffy and Vivi to Sabo, and by now it is obvious that Luffy carries the legacy of Joy Boy and Gol D. Roger. As previously stated, Vivi is fated to undo Lily’s mistake of siding with the World Government in the first place.
