Tom Cruise is known for putting his body on the line when it comes to stunts, andTop Gun: Maverickwas no exception. However, Neil deGrasse Tyson - science communicator, author, and the world’s most well-known astrophysicist - took issue with a particular scene starring Captain Pete Mitchell.DeGrasse Tyson also happens to be a notable movie buff, and as he admits, it took some time for him to share his opinions on 2022’s biggest film,Top Gun: Maverick, which mostly featured 100% real flight sequences involving Cruise and his co-stars. Nevertheless, the scene that seems to bother deGrasse Tyson was not one ofMaverick’s death-defying dogfights, but rather one that takes place towards the beginning of the movie, when Maverick is working as a test pilot on the Darkstar scramjet project.RELATED:Mission: Impossible Plots Are Secondary To The Action (And That’s Okay)In the film, Maverick ends up pushing the prototype aircraft past the Mach 10 target all the way up to 10.3 before things go wrong. DeGrasse Tyson pointed out on Twitter that the real wonder is how Maverick manages to survive the incident unscathed instead of suffering the quick death that should have ensued from his ejection. Without getting too technical, Mach 1 equals the speed of sound, so at 10 times that, Cruise’s frail body would have to pierce through the air. “Ejecting at these speeds, might as well be a brick wall,” deGrasse Tyson said, though it’s best read straight from the man himself.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/1579165291434897409?s=20&t=gNIM8idE29DPWkgku4rbAQ[/EMBED_TWITTER][EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/1579171207655870464?s=20&t=tNTf8LSllDEWHrg_P8MB2w[/EMBED_TWITTER][EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1579233321631985664?s=20&t=yUUVZQrg9viByVxeJ142vw[/EMBED_TWITTER]As usual, fellowrocket scientist Elon Muskchimed in to double down on deGrasse Tyson’s assertion in a further explanatory tweet. Musk equated the energy at the time of Maverick’s ejection to about 100Kg of dynamite, though Musk believes some type of escape pod would have been enough for Mitchell to cheat death. Suffice it to say, Cruise’s character doesn’t play by the rules, be it the Navy’s or those of physics, as he escapes with only a ringing ear to show for the whole incident, which funnily started the fan theories that Maverick actually dies at the start of the film and it’s all a dream. The astrophysicist sharedanotherTop Gun-related post, claiming the movie’s entire premise and strategy appear somewhat flawed in his eyes, as instead of pulling off hard maneuvers in a tight canyon for the film’s main mission, they could have just bombarded, the nearby missile towers. Admittedly, given deGrasse Tyson is no military expert, he was not as adamant on that last take.Cruise’s biggest stunts have comeout of theMission: Impossiblefranchise, so it would probably be quite funny to have deGrasse Tyson break down Ethan Hunt’s exploits from a scientific standpoint.Top Gun: Maverickis now available on digital platforms.MORE:Tom Cruise’s 7 Best Stunts, RankedSource:Neil deGrasse Tyson | Twitter

The movie-loving astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and Elon Musk have a few things to say about Tom Cruise's feats in Top Gun: Maverick.
