Summary

Naughty Dog will not be discussing any upcomingThe Last of Usprojects as part of the series' upcoming ten-year anniversary event, the studio has revealed. This development confirms that the2023 edition of The Last of Us Day will be a somber one.

Much like its name suggests, The Last of Us Day—formerly Outbreak Day—is a perennial happening meant to celebrate Naughty Dog’s hit post-apocalyptic franchise. While the series itself already had its ten-year anniversary this June, The Last of Us Day will once again take place on September 26, the day the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak reached critical mass in the lore of Naughty Dog’s games. The last two iterations of the event generated quite a lot of buzz, not least because both featured teasers for the first season ofThe Last of UsTV show.

No such major reveals will be happening this time around, with Naughty Dog just confirming that the 2023 The Last of Us Day stream won’t reflect on any future games or the second season of the HBO show. The September 26 broadcast, scheduled for 9 a.m. PT, will instead focus onThe Last of Usmerch, art, and miscellaneous announcements, the Sony-owned studio said. Many fans have already taken to social media to express their disappointment with this event agenda.

Be that as it may, the limited scope of the broadcast is not particularly surprising; withThe Last of Usmultiplayer spin-off getting delayedback in May, a September reveal was always looking unlikely. Meanwhile, while the inaugural season of the HBO show ended half a year ago, its follow-up has yet to even begin production due to the still-ongoing WGA strike.

The Last of Usshowrunner Craig Mazin did say that the work on the second season of the TV adaptation is set to start as soon as the strike ends, which is expected to happen later this fall. Nevertheless, this state of affairs clearly prevents Naughty Dog from sharing any kind of Season 2 promos during the celebratory stream, as there is simply nothing to tease just yet.

Apart from those two projects, the Sony subsidiary is currently also believed to be working on the third entry in the franchise, as the series creatorNeil Druckmann himself recently hinted atThe Last of Us 3. But even if that game already entered pre-production, that would still put it years away from release, meaning there’s slim chance of it even being officially confirmed until the developer is ready to share more news about its upcoming multiplayer spin-off.
