Ms. Marvelis a show about Kamala Khan’s origin story asMs. Marvel. Being the first Muslim, and Pakistani hero of the MCU, the show had many expectations going for it. Thankfully, the show delivers on every front. Diving deep into Pakistan’s history and featuring some of Pakistan’s most popular actors,Ms. Marvelbreaks many stigmas surrounding Pakistani culture.

Ms. Marveldeviated quite a bit from its comics roots. While the characters remain largely the same, quite a bit has been changed from the comics. Things such as origins of characters and Kamala’s powers have been changed from the comics. Since thelast episode of Ms. Marvel premiered yesterday, here are the biggest changes made in theMs. Marvelshow from the comics.

6Ms. Marvel’s Powers
Ms. Marvel’s powers in the show are nothing similar to her powers in the comics. In the show, Kamala has cosmic powers that allow her to manifest energy into any shape she desires. This allows for a number of powers, such as Kamala being able to shoot orbs and beams made of energy, or her extending her limbs and making them bigger, or her being able to create discs out of her energy and use them to walk/run above the surface. Since the first season ofMs. Marvelcovered her origin, there is a high likelihood that Kamala will get more powers overtime.
In the comics, Ms. Marvel’s is able to extend her limbs much like Reed Richards. She is also able to shape-shift and transform into anything. According to Kevin Feige, the changes come due to the comics and the MCU having entirely different timelines.
5Kamran
In the show, Kamran is among Kamala’s biggest allies. In fact, he is the only among his mother’sgroup of Clan Destineswho is not a villain. In the comics, Kamran is among Kamala’s biggest villains. Working for Lineage, an inhuman villain in the comics, Kamran initially is Kamala’s love interest but upon his discovery that Kamala isMs. Marvelhe kidnaps her and takes her to Lineage and later attacks her family too.

This change, however, is a welcome one. In the show, Kamran is a Clan Destine and is Kamala’s crush. The two later become friends with Kamran saving Kamala when the Clandestine attack her. The show then has them fight together to escape Sadie Deever and her forces in the last episode.
4Ms. Marvel’s Origin
In the comics, Kamala becomes aware of her superpowers after Black Bolt releases the Terrigen Mist, a mist that awakens powers within every Inhuman. The Terrigen Mist is also what makes Kamran aware of his power. Both Kamran and Kamala are Inhumans in the comics.
In the show, Kamala realizes she has superpowers when one day she decides to wear her grandmother’sbangles to Avengercon. It is later revealed that while the bangle awakened the powers, they were always a part of Kamala.
3Pakistani Origins
While Kamala has always been a Pakistani, the show really went deep into her Pakistani culture. A large part of the show was Pakistan, with multiple episodes said in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. The show had Kamala discover a lot about her Pakistani roots, from her great-grandmother, Aisha’s past and how her being a Djinn is where Kamala gets her powers from to Kamala discovering Karachi with her cousins and eating Birayni in a bag.

The show put an emphasis on the partition that created Pakistan too, with Kamala going back into the past and helping her grandmother find her way back to her dad during the partition. This change is another welcome one for the Pakistani representation in a Marvel show is a great way to introduce more people to Pakistani society.
2Kamala’s Family
While Kamala’s family is the same in the show as it is in the comics, the show putsa lot of emphasis on her family. Kamala’s family is a central part of the show. A lot of focus is put on familial values, such as traditions and believes. From Kamala’s protective parents to Amir’s traditional wedding, Kamala’s family is a big part of the show, unlike the comics where their role is not as major.
This is another good change for it is another example of accurate representation. In Pakistani, family is a very major part of one’s life and the show accurately depicts that.
1Kamala’s Being A Djinn
In the show, it is revealed that Kamala’s powers come from her being a Djinn. Djinns are similar to humans but exist in a different dimension, Noor. A group of Djinns called Clandestines were exiled from Noor and have been trying to find their way back from Earth ever since. Kamala is a part of this group. When Bruno first looks into Kamala’s powers, he realizes they are a result of a mutation in her body, certifying her as the first mutant in the MCU.
In the comics, Kamala is a normal teenager in New York who gets her powers due to the release of Terrigen Mist. This is when she realizes that she is Inhuman.
