A villain’s death will usually elicit a sense of relief, while a protagonist’s demise will often feel extremely saddening. No matter the character’s cause of death, watching them pass will always allow for a sense of finality. However, some don’t always stay dead.

Some characters will refuse death’s advances and narrowly avoid its clutches as a result. These individuals can return in a sequel or, in some cases, the same movie they died in to finish their stories. Only a few beings are capable of defying such sinister fates, but some are far more memorable than others.
8William Cage - Edge of Tomorrow
Edge of TomorrowseesTom Cruise playing the role of Major William Cage, an inexperienced military officer who is tasked with saving the world. Though he lacks the necessary fighting skills to succeed in his mission, he does his best to complete it, only to find himself reliving the same events over and over.
Cage isn’t able to vanquish the aliens at first, but repeatedly experiencing the same battle allows him to hone his fighting abilities to the point where he may stand a chance eventually. He dies countless times while attempting to complete his mission and learns from his mistakes upon each of his revivals.
7The Medical Students - Flatliners
In an attempt to uncover what awaits humanity in the afterlife, five unlikely medical students decide to conduct a series of experiments. The five agree that the only way to truly experience what lies beyond is to die, so they decide to take turns stopping their hearts.
They assume their quest for knowledge poses little danger so long as they monitor each other, but their insatiable quest for knowledge can only be satisfied by prolonging the duration of their deaths. They die and are resurrected multiple times throughout the movie’s duration.
6Groundhog Day
Groundhog Dayfollows the story of Phil Connors, a weathermanplayed by Bill Murraywho has lost sight of what matters most in life. One day, he sets off to Punxsutawney to report on an annual festivity known as Groundhog Day. He makes his dislike of the tradition quite clear during the movie’s opening, but his cruel words quickly come back to haunt him.
Phil completes his report on Groundhog day and then retires to a local inn, only to awaken the next day to find himself in a time loop. He experiences the same events over and over again before giving up and trying to end his life, but each attempt leads him right back to the beginning of the same day.
5Nyles & Sarah - Palm Springs
After coming into contact with an otherworldly portal, Sarah wakes up alone in her bed on what she believes to be November 10th, only to learn the events of November 9th are repeating themselves. She informs Nyles of her conundrum and learns that theyboth are suffering from the same experience.
She ends her life multiple times in an attempt to break the cycle but always wakes up at the same exact time and place. Devastated by her failed attempts of escaping this nightmare, she confronts Nyles who informs her that he also attempted to end his life only to find himself right back where he started on the same day.
4Freddy Krueger - A Nightmare On Elm Street
Freddy Krueger has experienced multiple deaths since his screen debut inA Nightmare On Elm Street. He suffered his first at the hands of his parents who burned him to death but has gone on to die in a variety of different ways since.
The only way to truly kill Freddy is to lure him into the real world, but this isn’t a permanent solution for some reason.He has returned multiple timessince his first death to wreak havoc in the dream world, so much in fact, that it is likely he will never stop.
3Voldemort - Harry Potter
When Harry Potter receives a letter informing him that he has been invited to attend a magical school for gifted young mages, he leaps at the opportunity to leave his life with Dursleys behind. Unfortunately, there is a dark wizard named Voldemort who wants nothing more than to bring Harry’s new life to an end.

Voldemort suffers multiple deaths at Harry’s hands, but these deaths are not as obvious as one would think. To guarantee his survival, Voldemortdivided his soul among seven objects, transforming them into living entities. To truly be rid of the dark lord once and for all, Harry is forced to destroy these objects, thus killing Voldemort multiple times.
2High Priest Imhotep - The Mummy
The opening ofThe Mummyallows the viewer to witness a brief segment of High Priest Imhotep’s past. Before his resurrection, he was in love with a woman named Anck-su-namun, the Pharoah’s mistress. Their love was forbidden, but this didn’t stop Imhotep from pursuing it anyway.
Imhotep was cursed with an immortal life as punishment for his romantic pursuits and placed in a sarcophagus. He eventually awakens a few centuries later but is finally killed by the unlikely trio who caused his awakening in the first place. He is once again resurrected in the sequel, only to be defeated once more by the same unlikely group.
1Loki - The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Loki’s first on-screen death takes place in the movieThorwhere he loses the will to go on amidst an identity crisis. Having discoveredhe is not an Asgardian, he embraces death and dives into a void, only to be revived forThor: The Dark World.
Loki’s next death comes as a result of him protecting his brother from a fatal attack. Thor can do nothing but cradle his brother to ease his passing but eventually learns his grief was wasted during their next meeting. Loki meets his next end inAvengers: Infinity Warat the hands of Thanos and, though this death felt more permanent, he likely has a few more lives to spare.
