Summary

Over the last few entries,Mortal Kombathas gotten increasingly experimental with its crossover DLC characters. The first guest DLC fighter in the franchise wasMortal Kombat2011’s Freddy Krueger, a pretty logical choice for a bloody game likeMortal Kombat.Mortal Kombat Xcontinued the horror guest fighter trend, bringing Jason Vorhees, Leatherface, Alien, and Predator to the game. ThenMortal Kombat 11dipped into action flick territory, bringing Terminator, RoboCop, and Rambo to the franchise. Now,Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC roster has gone in another bold new direction, focusing on villains (with two who have technically reformed since).

By all accounts,Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC rosteris shaping up very well. Omni-Man made a big splash upon his debut a few months ago, and Peacemaker and Homelander are heavily anticipated fighters. This could just be the start ofMortal Kombat 1’s crossover DLC, and there’s plenty of room for some more bizarre guest fighters like Chucky fromChild’s Play.

How Chucky Could Work as a Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Fighter

One Small Obstacle Prevents Chucky From Being a Mortal Kombat Fighter

From simply a brand synergy perspective, it makes complete sense forMortal KombatandChild’s Playto cross over.Mortal Kombat 1seems to be focusing on comic book characters right now, yet it’s only a matter of time before it sets its sights back on the horror genre, and Chucky will be ready and waiting.

There’s one big issue with having Chucky as a playable fighter inMortal Kombat 1, and that’s the character’s height, and how it would affect gameplay. From its very beginnings,Mortal Kombathas operated on a three-limb system, where players can attack an opponent’s head, mid-section, or legs.

Due to Chucky being the size of a child’s toy, he’d probably only be susceptible to low attacks, and that would dramatically lower the number of moves and combos that players could utilize against the character. While that could be a fun obstacle for seasonedMortal Kombatplayers to work around, it wouldn’t be too fun for the average player. But that doesn’t mean that Chucky should be ruled out altogether.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Chucky Would Have a Recent Blueprint to Follow

Just a few months ago, Chucky appeared as a crossover DLC Killer inDead by Daylight. Usually,Dead by Daylight’s Killersplay from a first-person perspective, but due to Chucky’s short stature and the presumed inability to see most of the environment, along with this perspective presenting issues when hooking Survivors, Chucky was given a third-person perspective.

Going above and beyond, Behaviour Interactive went out of its way to explain the in-universe reason behind this camera angle shift, showing that players aren’t actually controlling Chucky himself, but the ghost of Charles Lee Ray, the spirit that inhabits the doll. When players go to pick up a downed Survivor, the ghost appears and the camera seamlessly shifts to a first-person perspective, and once the Survivor has been hooked, it fades away again, and the third-person angle returns.

While it obviously wouldn’t work as a one-to-one recreation, there’s a blueprint there forMortal Kombat 1to follow. IfMortal Kombat 1wants to bring Chucky in as a guest fighter, it just needs to get a bit creative. For instance, players could technically be controlling the ghost of Chucky, in a similar vein toKenshi’s sword spirit, which stands just as tall as any other fighter in the game and can take damage from all the usual combos, but the doll is the one carrying out the attacks.
