In just a few days the MCU will be back on everyone’s minds asWandaVisionputs an end toMarvel’slong and partly involuntary hiatus. As Disney’s 2020 Investors Day showed, theMCU andStar Warsplay a huge partin the studio’s plans for the next decade and they are not improvising their way through things.
2021 is set to feature at least fourMarvelfilms, starting withBlack Widowand wrapping up the year withSpider-Man 3; while Disney Plus’ growing list of exclusives will bring a whole new set of stories and miniseries to go along with that, likeThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier,Loki,What If…?,Ms. MarvelandHawkeye, most of which put forward novel ways of portraying characters from the MCU according to the studios’ long-term plans.

For a better outlook on just how Marvel Studios comes up with the MCU’s timelines,Colliderdirectly asked Kevin Feige what such thought process is like, who went on to detail that “it’s always about 5 to 6 years versus what we’ve announced. So whatever that takes us to.” Currently, that would putpotential 2023 picks likeSecret Invasion,Armor Wars,andGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3as having been planned since 2017 or 2018.
The question gains special significance when considering Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, thus highlighting the matter ofwhenDeadpool 3and a newX-Menfilm might be on the way with Marvel Studios at the helm. Addressing that specific issue, Feige mentioned “It has been heavily discussed, as you might imagine. And we have a good feeling of where it’s going and when it’s going, but all that remains to be seen.”
One of the shining lights in Disney’s wave of December announcements was the news that theFantastic Fourwill be part of the MCU’s Phase Four, probably towards its end. That, coupled with the exciting possibility of how the X-Men and Deadpool blend in with the rest of the Marvel heroes will surely keep the studio occupied for the next 10 years or so.
Starting withWandaVision, Marvel’s Phase Four is set to usher in a new age where audiences are treated to 4-5 films and even Disney Plus exclusives each year, something Feige and Marvel Studios have been gearing up for years now. After such a long break, the MCU is in prime position to carefully plan content for an entire generation and they’re already quite far along in doing so.
