Square Enix has had a busy week on the announcement front, revealing a number of upcoming games to get fans excited. One of the most anticipated is the return of fan-favorite RPG titleLive A Live.

Live A Live, the 1994 SNES title from developerSquare Enix, is a turn-based combat RPG game that follows several protagonists through a variety of time periods. The game has been exclusive to Japan since its release. NowLive A Liveis receiving a remake on the Nintendo Switch that will be available worldwide.

The announcement came as a surprise during the February Nintendo Direct, revealing Nintendo would be publishing the striking 2.5D art style remake ofLive A Live. Fans have been quick to draw comparisons to the original, andone video compares the Switch version ofLive A Liveto the original release. The latest character trailer gives fans an even greater insight into the upcoming game.

TheLive A Livecharacter trailer reveals more of the updated 2.5D art style alongside a significant update to the details of environments. Most excitingly, players got a glimpse at the many stories they will be able to experience. Some examples include a wanderer with a bounty on his head from the Wild West, and a Shinobi who is undertaking a secret mission in the Twilight of Edo Japan. Also, in the distant future, the robot Cube engages in an outer space horror mystery. Square Enix has a whole host of characters returning to Switch now, with theKingdom HeartsSwitch collection getting a new title.

Fans also got to see more of the additional digital effects that are being introduced to the remake. Weather, lighting and shadows, spell effects, and motion blur all appear throughout the trailer. These changes in the remake ofLive A Livemake it more of a modern update on a classic, but it is not the only RPG with an upcoming remake. AChrono Crossremaster was recently confirmedfor PS4, Xbox and Steam.

This isn’t all the news from Square Enix, either. Fans of the game in Japan can purchase a limited edition version of theLive A Liveremake that comes with a board game. The limited-edition version also includes an assembly-required figure, an enamel bag, and a two-disc soundtrack, but it’s unclear whether it will be available for purchase outside of Japan. For RPG fans around the world, however, there’s still plenty to be excited about, as Square Enix recently confirmed therelease date for theFinal Fantasy 6Pixel Remaster.

Live A Livewill be available on July 22 for Nintendo Switch.
