Not only didWWE 2K22enjoy a positive reaction from fans and critics, but it also had strong sales, ensuring that the WWE video game license was going to stay with 2K Sports for the foreseeable future.WWE 2K22was followed up byWWE 2K23, which was also well-received. 2K Sports has been on a roll with WWE video games these past couple of years, which makes the decision to shut downWWE 2K22’s online servers so soon especially disappointing.
This past September, it was announced that theWWE 2K22servers would be shut downon Wednesday, July 30, 2025. With this being less than two years afterWWE 2K22first launched, fans were understandably outraged. Unfortunately, the decision to shut down theWWE 2K22online servers has not been reversed, and so anyone hoping to enjoy the online elements of the game will need to play it before January 3.
When Are the WWE 2K22 Servers Being Shut Down?
WWE 2K22’s online servers being shut down is devastating. While fans will still have access toWWE 2K22’s offline content, they will lose the ability to play matches online and downloadcommunity creations. These are key components of theWWE 2K22experience, and so to have them be taken away less than two years after the game has been on the market is frustrating. It may also make fans lose faith in futureWWE 2Kinstallments. After all, why should they invest their time and money on a game if its online functionality goes away before it is even two years old?
The tweet announcing the closure ofWWE 2K22’s online servers ended with a plug forWWE 2K23, which, as one might imagine, rubbed fans the wrong way. There are many who are worried thatWWE 2K23will suffer a similar fate not long afterWWE 2K24is out, though that remains to be seen.
As it stands,WWE 2K24still has yet to be officially announced. Speculation points to theWWE 2K24reveal happening around the Royal Rumblein January, so the new game will likely be announced mere weeks afterWWE 2K22’s servers go offline. Hopefully,WWE 2K22’s servers being shut down so soon after launch is an exception to the rule, andWWE 2Kfans don’t have to worry about losing access to the online content inWWE 2K23or future games.
