Robert Kirkman, besides being the creator of ubiquitous zombie horror franchiseThe Walking Dead, is also thecreator and writer behindInvincible, an adult superhero comic that is getting an animated show onAmazon Prime. Despite the fact that the live-action movie was announced in 2017, very little has been heard since. Now, Kirkman has recently confirmed that the project is still in the works and will not conflict with the upcoming animated show.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kirkman confirmed that not only would the live-actionInvinciblefilm be going forward, but it would also be aseparate story from the animated series. Currently, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached, the project is set to be part of a “two-track” plan according to Kirkman, with the film series running concurrently but not in the same universe as the animated series on Amazon Prime.

Though that may seem a bit confusing at first, Kirkmanisn’t concerned about crossing wires. The creator cited the multiple versions ofSpider-Manexisting at the same time as proof that audiences can handle various adaptations of the same story being told at the same time. When asked about theInvinciblefilm, the writer remarked, “that is still very much in development. That hasn’t changed,” he said. “We’re just taking a long time.”
While it’s been nearly 3 years with no significant news about the live-actionInvinciblemovie, it wouldn’t be the first time a film project has gone dormant only to rev up again years later. In fact, the animated seriesmay actually give some momentum to the film, acting as a sort of barometer for the public interest. That said, Kirkman insists that the show and the film will have substantial differences beyond their format and that people will “easily” be able to tell them apart.
He went on to say that the teams were “working to make sure that the two can exist and complement each other,” which at least suggests that they have given thought on how to differentiate the two projects. Hopefully, the film and the TV show will live up to the hopes of their creators and audiences will find good reasons to watch both when they finally release.
TheInvincibleshow will hit Amazon Prime sometime in 2021.
