While the reveal of the long-awaitedSpider-Man 2PS5 gamewas a nice surprise at the PlayStation Showcase, that game’s announcement was only a matter of “when.” The much bigger shock came when it was revealed that not only is Insomniac Games working onSpider-Man 2, but it’s also working on a PlayStation exclusiveWolverinevideo game as well, and now more details about that project have come to light.
TheWolverinevideo game from Insomniac Games is being helmed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, who serve as its creative director and game director, respectively. This duo led development onSpider-Man: Miles Morales, so they have certainly proven that they are more than capable of delivering a top-quality game. Insomniac has the same goal with theWolverinegame as it did withSpider-Man, and that is to make something that is true to character’s spirit but also feels “fresh” and reflects “the Insomniac spirit.”

Insomniac also confirmed that theWolverinegame is “standalone.” While not explicitly stated, this does seem to suggest that this means that theWolverinegame is not necessarily set in the same universe as theSpider-Mangame. There may be some nods between the games, but anyone hoping for this to be the start of an Insomniac-helmedMarvel video game universewill want to reel in their expectations a bit.
As for when fans will get to play theWolverinegame, it may be quite some time before it’s ready for launch. TheSpider-Man 2release date isn’t until 2023, andWolverinedidn’t get a release window at all. The only thing shown of the game was a brief CGI trailer that confirmed its existence and not much else. It stands to reason that theWolverinevideo game release date will be beyond 2023, though Insomniac hasn’t clarified on that front.
All Insomniac Games has said aboutWolverine’s development progress is that the game is “very early in development,” but that it will have an “emotional narrative” and feature “cutting-edge gameplay.“Insomniac’s track recordof putting out critically-acclaimed, award-winning games speaks for itself, and so anyone looking forward to theWolverinegame adaptation shouldn’t have to worry about it being disappointing.
More information on theWolverinevideo game from Insomniac Gameswill come to light in the months and years ahead. For now, fans can focus onSpider-Man 2’s 2023 launch and what that will entail.
