Gods and Monsters, Ubisoft’s open-world fantasy game, has yet to make an appearance during this summer’s wave of online reveals and announcements. A random mishap that saw an alpha version ofGods and Monstersbriefly available on Stadia has prompted Ubisoft to talk about the game, however. In quite the surprise, Ubisoft says thatGods and Monstershas dramatically changed since it was first shown during E3 2019, to the point where Ubisoft has even renamed the game.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Ubisoft wanted to make clear that the gameplay shown in theleaked Stadia gameis not representative of the current state ofGods and Monsters. The leak was apparently an E3 2019 demo shown behind closed doors to journalists. The video shows a game strikingly similar toThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Features like Link’s exhaustion meter are immediately recognizable. This is notable, because Ubisoft very clearly wants everyone to know thatGods and Monstersis not just aBreath of the Wildcopycat.

“Much has changed since then,” Ubisoft makes clear. “Features, tone, art, and character designs,” are all key aspects ofGods and MonstersthatUbisofthas changed since the E3 2019 demo was built. The new game could potentially be unrecognizable compared to the recently leaked gameplay. It could also still look similar, but Ubisoft is being very protective of its work.

However, as evidence that much has changed between theE3 2019 announcement ofGods and Monsters, as well as the demo, Ubisoft says the game’s name has changed.Gods and Monstersis now useful to the game that was originally announced, but it apparently is no longer accurate. Ubisoft did not clarify what the game’s name now is.

To find out more about the new game that wasGods and Monsters, gamers won’t have to wait too long. Ubisoft states that it will have more information about the new game to share at the end of the summer. Summer ends in September, so it may be a while yet before the game that used to beGods and Monstersreappears, as fewgaming eventsthat far out have been announced as of yet.

With the confirmation thatGods and Monsterswon’t reappear until later summer, it seems unlikely that it will be releasing in 2020. Otherwise, it seems very likely it would be shown in eitherSony or Microsoft’s summer digital events. If it’s announced lat summer it may be better targeted for launch in 2021, though, a true next-generation game.

The game previously known asGods and Monstersis currently in development.
