Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthis an exciting opportunity for Square Enix. The ending ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remakehas unburdened the development team of the canon of the original JRPG, leavingFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthto explore in new directions. That doesn’t mean Square Enix won’t play around with existing canon, however. It’s already confirmed thatFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill be revisiting many of theFinal Fantasy 7areas fans love. There’s a catch, however, as those regions may not necessarily be revisited in the same order.

The opening act ofFinal Fantasy 7takes place entirely in the city of Midgar and, fittingly, so doesFinal Fantasy 7 Remake. Once players leave Midgar an incredible world opens up to them.Final Fantasy 7players will likely fondly recall visiting Kalm, The Gold Saucer, Cosmo Canyon,Nibelheim, The City of Ancients, and other key areas.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthdoesn’t have to revisit these areas, but it plans to nevertheless. Square Enix has confirmed that “no locations” are going to be cut from the new game.

While noFinal Fantasy 7areas will be cut fromFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix will still be flexing its creativity in the new game. The areas that players will be visiting inFinal Fantasy 7Rebirthwon’t be in the same order as the original game. The story will obviously be a dramatic departure as a result, but there will also be an opportunity to see these locations and those who live in them in a new way.Creative director Tetsuya Nomurahimself confirmed these details.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthmay be the focus of this conversation, but it should also include the unnamed third game planned for the remake ofFinal Fantasy 7. Not every area may be found inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, after all. Some may be in thethirdFinal Fantasy 7game.

All that Nomura has clarified is that “nothing will be cut or shortened.” Like withFinal Fantasy 7 Remake’s journey through Midgar, the experience will be expanded, if anything. This is a new opportunity to explore the story and themes ofFinal Fantasy 7,and Square Enix is very clearly planning to do so.

There’s plenty of mystery found in Nomura’s comments aboutFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthand its structure. ThatFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill revisit the areas players remember, but not in the same order, feels right with the direction the new games are taking. It maintains thatnostalgiaFinal Fantasy 7fans cravewhile keeping things fresh and new. Players can find out exactly what Nomura means whenFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirtharrives.
