Summary

Barretalways came across as a rough-and-tumble dude inFinal Fantasy 7. He believed in Avalanche’s cause to save the planet and did not mince words. He was serious and rarely let his guard down for anyone. While it seemed like he would play out that same way inFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, he slowly unwinds throughout that game.

He’s even looser inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth.Barret is actually a teddy bearand says ridiculous things all the time. He has plenty of goofy moments, sharp reactions, and moving words as well. He’s not all about jokes, so let’s reveal some of his best lines.

Chapter 3, Mythril Mine

InChapter 3 ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the team heads into the Mythril Mine. After a robed figure falls into a pit, Barret volunteers to go after him. Red 13 joins as well, and the party splits up into two teams, which is the first of many times this happens in the game.

Below, Barret and Red 13 are trying to figure out what these robed figures want, which is when Cloud gets brought up. Barret is worried Cloud may not be able to keep it together, as if he knows Cloud is one of them already.

Chapter 4, Shinra-8

This scene happens at the end ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth’sfourth chapter, wherein Cloud and the others sneak aboard the Shinra-8 cruise ship. The team is discussing what just went down regarding Yuffie trying to assassinate Rufus, who had just broken a deal with them. Rufus was going to leave them alone to deal with Sephiroth, but changed his mind because he thought Yuffie was their killer.

Barret is clearly okay with how things ended up, because he says this line about Rufus being the devil. His grudge towards Shinra knows no bounds, which will be elaborated on later.

6“Sure, You Can Do It, While You’re Warming The Bench!”

Chapter 7, Mt. Corel

One of the funniest pairings in the game is Barret and Yuffie. Barret is the unofficially oldest of the group, although technically Red 13 is, but he ages differently. Regardless, Barret is like the dad of the team. He does have a daughter, Marlene, and dealing with ateenager like Yuffieis good practice for when she grows up.

While hiking up Mt. Corel in Chapter 7, she keeps asking him permission for things, from breathing to blowing her nose. By the end, he throws up his hands and screams this line. There’s only so much teen bullying a dad can take.

Chapter 8, Gold Saucer

Barret has some great rants inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but this one in Gold Saucer is one of his best. When Cloud and Barret try to find a hotel to stay in, they see all kinds of haunted machinations come out of the ground as part of the hotel’s gimmick.

Presumably, it’s all running on Mako energy, and Barret is not okay with this. He’s like a dad complaining about the electricity bill, and Cloud could not care less. It’s a great moment bookended by Cait Sith coming out of nowhere.

Chapter 8, Corel Prison

Barret says this quote in Chapter 8 as well, but this happens around his fight with Dyne. It’s one of thetoughest boss fights inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthin terms of gameplay, and it’s also tough emotionally for Barret. He tells the group about his backstory regarding how he thought Dyne had died, and how he lost his arm due to Scarlet and Shinra.

The zoom-in on his gun-arm as he says “I chose a means to an end” is some brilliant directing. It would be interesting to see Barret have a normal prosthetic arm at some point in this trilogy of remakes, to indicate that he’s finally ready to let his eco-terrorist life go.

3“Hey, Get Your Sh*t Together, Tifa Needs You.”

Chapter 9, Gongaga Reactor

Cloud and Barret have a thoughtful moment after Dyne dies. Cloud says he is there for him, and he really means it. Barret even believes he cares not just for him, but for the whole team. That’s why Cloud’s sudden murderous turn towards Tifa at the Gongaga Reactor was a real twist.

It wasn’t Cloud doing it though, as he was being brainwashed by Sephiroth. Thankfully, Tifa survived her time in the Lifestream, and Barret had to help snap Cloud out of his guilt with this line and a punch to the face.

2“You And Me, We Gotta Stop Living In Guilt And Regret.”

Chapter 10, Cosmo Canyon

Cosmo Canyon is one of the biggest and most confusing regions to navigate in the game. It also has one ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth’sbest side questsif players care about lore. The Gilgamesh mission in this region has Cloud and the others meeting up with Yuffie’s former Avalanche contacts.

Through their interactions, players get to learn about what happened to Wedge after Shinra HQ. Also, there are some flashback scenes showing Barret, Tifa, Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge all celebrating as a team. By the end of this series of side quests, Barret tells Tifa that they have to be okay going on without Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge, as they both carry the guilt of their deaths with them.

Barret in Costa del Sol Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

1“Another Loner, As If One Wasn’t Enough Of A Pain In My Ass.”

Chapter 12, Costa Del Sol

There are sevenplayable characters inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthand two support characters. Cid and Vincent were playable in the original, but they only join the group toward the end of this game, and they don’t participate in battle. Upon landing in Costa del Sol again, Vincent hops off the plane and sulks away without saying a word.

This comment from Barret is a dig at Cloud, since he and Vincent are very similar. This scene is great, because everyone except Cloud knows that Barret is referencing Cloud as a moody loner, but Cloud is clueless as ever.
