The Xbox Games Showcase is taking the internet by storm, and there are some gems hidden in between the announcements. A new studio, TwistedRed Games, has stepped onto the world gaming stage with the announcement that its debut title,Exomecha, is coming to PC andXboxin 2021.
The studio was founded in 2019 with the aim to create AAA games on the Unreal Engine for the whole world to enjoy free-to-play. Since then it received an Epic Mega Grant from Epic Games, and has turned that investment into a promising trailer released today. At first blush, the game looks like the lovechild ofHaloandTransformers, withWarhammerserving as a godparent.

Xbox is already home totheHalofranchise, andExomechahas a very similar feel, especially on the weaponry front. The trailer features similar armaments to what Master Chief might have available: smooth-bodied machine guns with scopes, helicopters that can be hijacked by dispatching the pilot, tanks, and other vehicles. Even the pacing seems similar, with the initial trailer showing robotic troops storming a beachfront.
There are definitely elements to this trailer that are exciting on a gameplay aspect — at one point in the trailer a soldier flies by on a hoverboard, only to be blasted out of the sky. The stars of the show, the giantTransformers-like robots, brandish swords and shields, having their own titanic battle while their smaller and more vulnerable cohorts face off at their feet. As if that weren’t enough, a mighty robot-dragon barges in to cause even more chaos on the battlefield.
Speculations run wild about whatExomechagameplay will actually entail. This FPS may beveryHalo-like, but there are elements at play that suggest something more. The giant sword-wielders could be characters in themselves, but it would not be unreasonable to assume from their robotic appearance that they could also count as vehicles and can, therefore, be captured, just like the helicopters and tanks also appearing in this game.
Player responses to the news have been all over the place so far, from delighted anticipation to apathy. Some compared the trailer toTitanfall, lamenting that there will be noTitanfall 3. TwistedRed is clearly trying to make its title a unique gameplay experience, and hopefully,Exomechawill appeal to the broad player base.
Exomechawill be coming to PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in 2020.
