The free-to-play battle royale genre has taken the world by storm in recent years, and anime games are joining the ranks ofFortniteandCall of Duty: Warzone. The popular anime seriesMy Hero Academiahas a new video game on the way, recently announced inWeekly Jumpmagazine via a news blurb discussingMy Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble.
This is not the firstMy Hero Academiavideo game, it’s the fourth following twoMy Hero One’s Justicefighting games and the mobile team-building RPGMy Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero. However,Ultra Rumbleis set to be a departure from previous games, taking on a new online multiplayer format that will be very different from the battle-action style of the four-playerMy Hero One’s Justice. My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble So Far
The announcement in Weekly Jump magazine doesn’t give too much away forMy Hero Academiafans. It does, however, feature several shots of what appear to be gameplay stills, and these images display characters in a variety of scenarios. Some shots appear to be mid-battle with beams and projectiles flying around, while others seem to show characters interacting either with NPCs or other players, leading fans to believe the game may feature more than just thebattle royale aspect.
For those who read the manga or watch its anime adaptation, it remains to be seen what characters will be playable. The magazine feature doesn’t give away much, but it does presentIzuku Midoriya and All Might, Shoto Todoroki, Katsuki Bakugo, and the villainous Shigaraki. It’s safe to say that these characters will most likely either be playable or at least central NPCs.
Beyond the characters who appear on the announcement, there have been no official confirmations. The article text does promise 24-player multiplayer in the battle royale, so many are hopeful that this large lobby size will lead to the developer creating an even larger roster of characters to choose from. It seems likely that players will be able to pick many, if not all, of the heroes inMy Hero Academia’s class 1-A, including fan-favorites like Ochaco Ururaka and Tenya Iida. The inclusion of All Might has many fans curious about the ability to play as teachers in the upcoming game, or whether they will be able to play as villains due to Shigaraki’s appearance.
Bandai Namcohas not confirmed a release date forMy Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble. However, there will be a closed beta test period prior to the game’s release, which will be open for gamers to join for free. There is no set date for that testing to begin, and fans cannot yet register to be included.Ultra Rumbleitself will also be free-to-play per the information available now, and is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
Fans have already begun to speculate about what this new game will look like. It seems likely thatUltra Rumblewill exist in the universe of the anime rather than theMy Hero Academiamanga, as otherMy Hero Academiagames have been anime-based. Yet fans are left with more questions than answers for now, such as wondering what abilities characters will have, where the game takes place, and if it will be heroes versus villains or a complete free-for-all. Answers to more specific questions should become available as Bandai Namco reveals more.
