The Witchertrilogy is filled with characters that players get attached to over the course of the games. While it’s great thatThe Witcherseries is continuing with a new video game trilogy, the fact that there is likely to be a time jump of some kind, either forward or back, means that most of the beloved characters from the games won’t make an appearance.

There are, however, some characters who are long-lived and versatile enough to show up, no matter how far in the future or past the series skips. Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, or simply Regis, is a higher vampire, friend of Geralt, and an immortal with the flexibility to appear at any point inThe Witchercanon.

Regis' Background and History in The Witcher

Higher Vampires

Regis is ahigher vampire inThe Witcher, an extremely rare formof vampire that stands apart from the other vampiric species. Higher vampires don’t need to drink blood to survive, are indistinguishable from humans in their human form, and are highly intelligent. They’re also incredibly hardy and can survive all injuries no matter how severe. The only way to kill a higher vampire is for them to be killed by another higher vampire. Higher vampires arrived on the Continent during the Conjunction of the Spheres, and mostly leave human societies in peace, with some of them living unnoticed alongside humans.

The Conjunction of the Spheres

Regis was one of the highervampires to arrive during the Conjunction of the Spheres, making him over 1,500 years old. This differs from book canon, where he’s just over 400 years old and was born on the Continent after the Conjunction. He mentions the other world he came from inBlood and Wineand the difficulties in adapting to a new world. Other higher vampires, such as Dettlaff, had difficulties adapting to the Continent and are more hostile to human society in general, although this is also because of how humans come to treat them.

Status in Game Canon

WhileRegis' book counterpart was killed by the sorcerer Vilgefortz, he’s still alive inThe Witchergame canon. Vilgefortz melted him in events outside of the games and, as he explains to Geralt inBlood and Wine, Dettlaff restored him using a great deal of his own blood and power. As a higher vampire, Vilgefortz’s attack wouldn’t have kept him incapacitated permanently, but his restoration would have taken many years if he were left on his own.

Appearances in Future The Witcher Games

The Witcher Timeline

Because of his advanced age and presence on the ContinentsinceThe Witcher’s Conjunction of the Spheres, any new games inThe Witcherseries set in the past, no matter how far back, have the possibility of having Regis play a role. As ofBlood and Wine, Regis is alive inThe Witchervideo game canon. As higher vampires are so difficult to kill, no matter how far in the futureThe Witcher 4is set, there is a chance Regis could appear.

Popularity

Despite only appearing inThe Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, Regis is a very popular side character thanks to his soft-spoken demeanor and gentle nature, whichdefies expectations of him as aWitchervampire. As a character, Regis would also be interesting to place alongside another witcher protagonist, as many witchers don’t have the same perspective on monsters as Geralt that he developed with years of experience. Regis, as an intelligent, caring being, could inspire another witcher protagonist to change their opinions on monsters and help them become a more nuanced character.
