From now on players will need to use a 2-factor authentication method to download games for free. This should not impact players, who are already registered with the Epic Games Store and it will not make free games less available. However, there is a small process that gamers will have to follow to continue downloading theregular free games on the Epic Games Store.

Users of the store need to install an authentication application, such as Google Authentication, and set it up. Following that users will need to go to the ‘Password & Security’ page of theEpic Games Store. Users then need to find ‘Two-Factor Authentication’ on the page and enable the authentication application, equally users can set up an SMS authentication at this point. Before gaming players just need to screenshot the QR code in the authentication application and then they can start enjoying their free content. It should be noted that players should save their back up codes in case they run into issues logging in to their authentication application in the future.
This extra step was done “in an effort to encourage our players to take steps to strengthen their Epic account security” and it will likely be a success as it is not disruptive.
