Elden Ringswept through the gaming sphere like a storm a few months ago, and players played it to death. Multiple completions and victories with weird controllers are already recorded, as isone player’s moment of hitting max level.

Despite the crushing difficulty of many of its fights,Elden Ringis arguably the most welcoming of the SoulsBorne games so far, thanks to its open world and the many approaches players can take. There are also many parts of the game that mix oddly funny moments with difficulty, but one of the more classic funny/difficult elements is now missed by veteran SoulsBorne players.

Players find themselves missing the Mimics from theDark Soulsseries inElden Ringand wishing they would make a return. The Mimics ofDark Soulsare an interesting spin on the classic monster most often found inDungeons & Dragons. Not just the regular treasure chest with teeth, these chests are also tall and gangly, standing even taller thanthe surprisingly large Black Knife Assassins. TheDark SoulsMimics are one of the most terrifying foes in the game, and now, one of the most fondly remembered.

There are a lot of reasons behind this. The Mimics combine a few of the most nasty surprises for players in the wholeDark Soulsseries, turning what should be a reward into instant death. Once players figure out how to spot a Mimic, they learn that even if it doesn’t get its surprise attack it’s still a difficult fight. Once all of that is under a player’s belt, they learn some fun things about Mimics, like how they can be put to sleep for easy treasure. Even afterhitting max playtime inElden Ring, many players have not come across such a multifaceted enemy.

While there are mimics inElden Ring, they mostly mimic people instead of things. This includes the Mimic Tear Spirit Ash, which has all the strengths and weaknesses of a player character. This means that while it can be very powerful, theMimic Tear can also get taken out by Godfreyand other enemies in ways other Spirit Ashes cannot.

It is possible that Mimics will make a return inElden Ring’s DLC, but there’s no guarantee it won’t be a case of “be careful what you wish for.“PromisingElden Ringdungeon runs end in disasterenough without false treasure chests destroying players as well.

Elden Ringis available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
