A new patent suggests thatEAis working on an automatic color blindness system that will adapt to a player’s needs rather than relying on menu adjustments or sliders. While EA is garnering both praise and criticism for the recentrelease ofStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, an upcoming upgrade to its systems may be another boost to its reputation.

As consoles have improved over the years, several accessibility features have been added like options for deafness, blindness, motor impairments, and more. While big gaming companies continue to move the industry forward with impressive technology, patents are filed that give fans an idea of what’s coming down the pipeline. With Blizzard, Sony, and Turtle Beach among the latest examples of such companies to file extensive patents,EAis adding to its contributions with an improved color blindness system.

Noting the fact that UI options don’t often unlock until players reach a certain part of a game, EA is working on a solution that could automatically adapt to a player’s needs rather than waiting for a menu option to be changed. The new system and methods intend to help people with colorblindness like protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia by offering in-game objectives or items to choose between as they may with visual indicators in existing game menu screens. The items illustrated by EA in the patent are various stick figures of different colors, with the apparent intent for players to distinguish one from another based on their tone which can helpgames published by EAidentify colorblindness before UI options unlock.

The EA patent notes a few different gameplay systems that may be combined in order to determine which colorblindness a gamer has, with one being computer-implemented to streamline the process between hardware and software. Similar toother patented EA computing systems, this one will use a PC or console’s processor, memory, mass storage, graphics cards, and internet connection to effectively gather the colorblind data in order to adjust for a player’s need. According to the EA patent, this automatic colorblind recognition may also work with TVs and small devices that plug into them, kiosks that have internet connections, car console devices, computerized appliances, wearable devices like smart watches and glasses, and mobile devices.
