Dr Disrespect is at it again, this time with praise and excitement for an upcoming FPS game. The content creator has shown a keen interest in the genre throughout his career, though not always for the better.
It’s no secret that The Doc is one to stir up controversy (and in fact haspermanently lost his Twitch accountover unknown reasons) and frequently trolls other players as well. But even he can take interest in upcoming games that show promise, and with more positive remarks than his usual banter.

In this particular case, The Doc highlighted the upcoming FPSThe Finals, which he described as a combination ofBattlefield,Team Fortress 2,andOverwatch. In fact, the game is being developed by former members of theBattlefieldteam who have since founded Embark Studios for whichThe Finalsis the team’s first major project. As The Doc states regarding the ambitious game:
“You always have to appreciate a big vision and a unique take and then pull off at a good and high level. .. [And] if destruction is not done right, it can be really bad. I think we have seen a lot of examples where it does not add to the gameplay. It’s tricky, but based on what we just saw right there, it can complement the gameplay.
For context purposes, Embark Studios dates back to 2018 and counts several formerBattlefieldteam members among its ranks, including former franchise lead and Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund,Battlefield: Bad Company 2artist Robert Runesson, andBattlefield 3audio director Stefan Srandberg. Embark also laid the groundwork for other studios and development teamssuch as Wayfinder Games. And while The Doc himself is not aBattlefieldexpert per se, the level of influence onThe Finalsis unmistakable. This includes the destructible environments for whichBattlefieldis known for, and whichThe Finalstakes influence from as well. The Doc was attracted toThe Finalsby genre expert Jackfrags, who was fortunate to share an early look at the game.
Games that blend elements from a multitude of competing projects are often among the most ambitious projects in game development, and while they don’t always work out they do offer alternatives and in some cases outright combinations of mechanics from the games that inspired their creation. The Finalsis one such game, with a premise that combines the game show inspiration ofMad Worldwith thearena shooter mechanicsof games likeTeam Fortress 2andUnreal Tournamentamong its other sources of influence.
In fact,The Finalsdid remind a commenter of the latter inspiration, which The Doc also concurred with in stating that “[i]t’s got a little personality, I can see a littleUnrealpersonality in it for sure.” It remains to be seen just how wellThe Finalswill represent its heritage in arena shooters andenvironmental destruction, even for all the promise that is shown to date.
The Finalsis in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
