Destinyis home to numerous formidable alien races but the Hive are arguably the most imposing and unnerving faction in the game. Even so, players have slaughtered their way through much of the Hive nobility and user Cr4shdown on Reddit created a handy infographic to show how much of the Hive “royal family” is still standing.
The Hive are different from the other races ofDestinyin that they are ruled essentially by one large family. Thus, it is possible to neatly represent all their rulers in one family tree. They are also unique in the sense that the most powerful of their kind can only be killed in their personal pocket dimensions called “throne worlds”.

The first time players explored a throne world and faced its ruler was in theThe Dark Belowexpansion forDestiny. In its climax, playersfound Crota and slew him for goodusing the blades of his Knight brethren. This, understandably, enraged his father,Oryx the Taken King, who invaded the Solar System seeking revenge and power.
Oryx is most likely the villain who has struck fear into players' hearts the most. Fans got to face, and defeat, this Hive God two distinct times. Firstly, during the finale ofThe Taken Kingcampaign, after which Oryx escaped to his throne world. In theKing’s Fallraid, players pursued him into his pocket dimension, the rules of which he controlled. Oryx was permanently killed at the height of his power, but his essence was crafted into the weapon calledTouch of Malice. Cr4shdown’s image below shows that Oryx had many children, but the first pretender to his throne wasn’t from his lineage.
The vacancy Oryx’s death left was to be filled by Malok, son of Savathûn. Malok’s short-lived rise in power was ended in the April Update ofThe Taken Kingexpansion and the Taken were once again leaderless. Years later, inForsaken, the Taken plague got unleashed on the Dreaming City. It was a cyclical curse orchestrated by a daughter of Savathûn, Dûl Incaru, whose repeated deaths still reset the cycle every three weeks,trapping the Dreaming City in a time loop.
InDestiny 2: Shadowkeep, players faced Hashladûn, daughter of Crota, the Hive Wizard responsible for erecting the Scarlet Fortress on the Moon and for harnessing the power of the pyramid ship beneath. She sought revenge after Guardians decimated much of her family but before she could complete her mission, Hashladûn was slain at the top of her spire.
After years of anticipation, Savathûn herself will be the primary antagonist inDestiny 2’s 2021 flagship DLC calledThe Witch Queen. She was already mentioned during a cutscene inSeason of Arrivalsand appears to be getting involved in the pyramid ship invasion on the Solar System. Since Savathûn is said to be the most cunning of the Hive, players are uncertain whether she will risk a direct confrontation at all.
