Summary
The upcomingCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3is grabbing a lot of attention for a lot of reasons. But as well as coming out only one year after its predecessor and potentially finishing up the new trilogy’s single-player narrative, there is one element of the release that may further explain its high levels of hype.
Interestingly,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3seems to be launching as a relatively uncontested AAA release towards the latter half of 2023. When compared to the stiff competition of the recentModern WarfareandModern Warfare 2,MW3may have a massively important competitive edge over its predecessors.

The Industry Competition Faced By Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2
2019’sModern Warfarepredictably drew huge amounts of attentionbeing one of the most significantCall of Dutylaunches in recent memory. As the launch title of a rebooted trilogy from one of the most belovedCoDsub-franchises,Modern Warfarewas decently prepared to compete with other significant FPS releases that came in 2019.
For example,2019 also saw the launch ofApex Legends, which has gone on to become one of the most popular and defining battle royale experiences in the industry. Other 2019 releases includeMetro Exodus,Borderlands 3, andThe Outer Worlds, showcasing the sheer range of first-person experiences that the year heralded. 2022 then saw the release ofModern Warfare 2, carrying forward the hype for the fresh take on an iconic trilogy. Like its 2019 predecessor,MW2had to contend with several comparable releases that will have inevitably taken some steam away from its own launch.

Hugely anticipated releases would further pepper this span of time withthe likes ofDying Light 2,Halo Infinite,Battlefield 2042,High on Life,Scorn, andTiny Tina’s Wonderlandsdominating a lot of industry attention. These titles across 2019 and 2022 arguably impacted the dominance thatMWandMW2would have otherwise had on the FPS genre. While these titles were still successful, it seems that the inbound release ofModern Warfare 3may finally give fans a glimpse as to what heights theMWreboot can soar to without outside interference.
The Relatively Uncontested Nature of Modern Warfare 3
The inboundModern Warfare 3is set to release in November, having to deal with a somewhat less threatening overall arsenal of competitors throughout the year. Of course, the main contender thatMW3will face off against isthe massively anticipatedStarfield, but by releasing a month later it seems thatMW3will be given more time to shine when compared to its predecessors.
Other thanStarfield,Modern Warfare 3will only have to battle against the likes ofTom Clancy’s The Division HeartlandandImmortals of Aveumas large-scale FPS experiencesthis year. There is a much calmer frequency of comparable titles coming out in 2023 when compared to 2022 and 2019, and whileStarfieldwill be a tough opponent in terms of a battle for the spotlight,Modern Warfare 3still has a lot of room to breathe.
With,Modern Warfare 3already shaping up to be a momentous and defining project, the lesser impact of outside releases may do wonders for the title’s reception, even if what it recycles fromMW2has some fans disappointed. Away from the congested release years ofModern WarfareandModern Warfare 2, it is clear to see the advantage thatMW3already has over past installments of the franchise.
