Gearbox Software has released the long-awaitedBorderlands 3DLC 2, which gives players a brand new planet to explore named Xylourgos. The name of the planet has raised some eyebrows as being particularly hard to spell and pronounce, but it’s not just gibberish.Borderlands 3writer Sam Winkler has offered some new insight as to why Gearbox Software decided to name the new DLC 2 planet Xylourgos.
Apparently, there were a couple of different reasons why theBorderlands 3team decided to name Xylourgos. One is that the “xy” and “ou” letters felt “cosmic,” but another reason is that Xylourgos is the Greek word for “carpenter.” This is a reference tolegendary horror film director John Carpenter, who directed the classic 1982 sci-fi horror filmThe Thing. The Thing, similarly to theBorderlands 3Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC, features frozen wastelands and tentacle creatures.

So it seems that theBorderlands 3DLC took inspiration from John Carpenter as well as the works ofHP Lovecraft, though the Lovecraftian elements are definitely a bigger focus when it comes to the story and new characters in the DLC.
Now thatBorderlands 3fans have found a good amount of time to thoroughly explore Xylourgos and complete DLC 2, it will be interesting to see what’s next from the looter-shooter. TheBorderlands 3season passpromises at least two more expansions for the game, which will presumably launch this summer or fall. However, it’s possible that certain circumstances could cause the DLCs to be delayed.
Right now, the world is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic, which has already caused some games to be delayed. Gearbox has acknowledged the coronavirus by releasingnewBorderlands 3shift codesfor those stuck at home, but hasn’t said anything about it potentially impacting the development of its DLC.
Something else that could potentially throw a wrench inBorderlands 3’s DLC plans is a situation that has recently come to light at Gearbox Software. Evidently,Gearbox employees won’t be getting bonusesthat they were promised, despiteBorderlands 3being a massively successful title. It remains to be seen just how much backlash this will cause internally, and it will definitely be interesting to see how the situation develops moving forward.
Borderlands 3is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
