The Elder Scrollsis a massive franchise with a variety of cross-media partnerships over the years. That includes multiple board games, includingThe Elder Scrolls: Call to ArmsandThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - The Adventure Game, the latter of which is tentatively planned for release in 2022. Even with another board game still moving toward release, another has now been announced. IntroducingThe Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era, which ties into the ongoing events ofThe Elder Scrolls Online.
The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Erais planned to be a cooperative tabletop fantasy adventure game. It’s intended for 1 to 4 players, with robust systems for character progression and combat. That includes a wide selection of skills and spells drawn fromThe Elder Scrolls Online, not to mention character classes inspired by heroes from the game and universe. It is, like the other board games based onThe Elder Scrollsbefore it, effectively an RPG.

The board game’s setting and its story will all draw fromThe Elder Scrolls OnlineandThe Elder Scrollsoverall, as well. According to an initial description of the game’s story, players will be involved in an effort by King of the Worms Mannicarco’s attempt to join Coldharbour, a plane of Oblivion, with Nirn. It’s also confirmed that the adventure will see players crossing all overTamriel, rather than being restricted to any single region.
The team behindThe Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Ageis well-experienced. Chip Theory Games is known for games includingCloudspire,Burncycle, andToo Many Bones, among others.The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Agewill be Chip Theory Games' largest project yet, however, but that’s perhaps expected from acrossover withThe Elder Scrolls.
Chip Theory Games has also confirmed that it’s working withBethesda’sElder Scrolls Onlineteamdirectly on the game. The extent of this isn’t entirely clear. It could just be to ensure the authenticity of the world inThe Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era. But it will be interesting to see if it leads to more specific ties toThe Elder Scrolls Onlineand or any otherElder Scrollsgames.
The one area left unexplained by the announcement ofThe Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Ageis Chip Theory Games' plans for funding and release.Board games, particularly licensed board games, almost always do a crowdfunding drive of some kind, so news of that is likely coming soon.
