Fresh from celebrating the new camera feature inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonssecond summer update, which brings backthe much-loved HUD removal glitch in an official capacity, players have been noticing something more unusual. While running around their islands, players have started tripping over and falling down, an event that’s even worse when holding one of the newly added floating balloon items.

TheAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsupdate 1.4.0 also introduces fireworks shows, the ability to save backups of players islands, a much requested feature, as well as the ability to visit other islands through the magic of dreaming. Players with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription can upload their island once per day, and visit other islands by entering the relevant code. As the visit is through a dream though, players cannot buy items or pick fruit when visiting other people’s islands.

The emergence of tripping has been accompanied by the discovery that when a player hits a rock and finds a gold nugget, they will want tocraft a new piece of DIY, King Tut’s mask. Wearing this mask is pretty amusing, but it also causes the player to trip more often, which gaming site Polygon notes, suggests that the minor inconvenience of tripping may be part of a more detailed luck system heading toAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsin the future.

In pastAnimal Crossinggames, luck was a game mechanic which impacted the player’s fortune throughout the day. Each previous game handled luck differently, but examples of its effects include prompting villagers to give gifts, items to spawn either more or less frequently, and impacting how much items can be bought and sold for. Indeed, tripping over, losing handheld items when tripping, and tripping more frequently while wearing the King Tut mask have all appeared in the series before. The apparent introduction of the luck mechanic is also leading players to speculate about the return of Katrina, a fortune-telling black Panther, who has appearedin all the previous games in the series.

Some gamers have suggested that adding series features such as luck over time, meant the game was unfinished on release. However thesheer success of the game, and its love among fans, shows that theAnimal Crossing: New Horizonswas clearly ready for its release back in March. There is a risk though, that adding in a mechanic like luck could risk frustrating newer players, but more than likely it will be embraced as yet more depth in an already time-consuming game.

Besides which, most gamers are now used to luck being an integral part of games via loot boxes and similar devices, and Nintendo will be highly unlikely to include any of thefrustrations of those mechanics, at least not in a non-mobile game.
